The Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory has announced the official consideration of ‘La Desbandá’ as a Place of Democratic Memory.
Ángel Víctor Torres has announced that the procedure has begun, with the publication of the opening agreement in the BOE. Just when the 87 years of this tragic chapter of the Civil War are commemorated, “we take another step in the protection, knowledge and dissemination of these facts, in which more than 3,000 people were killed. They were bombed as they fled by road from Malaga to Almeria,” he said.
The minister presided over the tribute to all the victims of ‘La Desbandá’, held at the Fort of Carchuna. At the event, in which the Secretary of State for Democratic Memory, Fernando Martínez, was present, Torres recalled that this tragic event represented “the first great mobilization of population in times of war, prior to the Second World War” and that in February 1937 the defenceless civilian population became a systematic military objective, being bombed by sea and with the support of the rebellious aviation.
