Last Saturday Civil Guards of the Provincial Maritime Service of Bizkaia, carried out preventive protection and safety devices with the patrol boat Río Guadalete, in support of the Guadalhorce River of Cantabria, on the occasion of the celebration of the XXXIII Underwater Fishing World Championship 2023, which was held in the Cantabrian town of Laredo. At about 20:47 hours they received notice of the possible sighting of several people with difficulties in the water in the area.
At that time the agents, due to the urgency of the intervention and having already fallen the night, landed in a quick maneuver the auxiliary boat of the Guadalete River with two civil guards to the rescue, sail the patrol boat in support of the search and rescue of the bathers.
At 9:00 p.m., and thanks to the skill and knowledge of the sailors of the Cantabrian currents, the auxiliary rubber managed to locate four people in the maritime channel that leaves from the Bay of Santoña to the open sea. They were divided into two beach mats with clear symptoms of exhaustion, disorientation and hypothermia principle, so the agents rescued them quickly by hoisting them on board their boat.
The bathers, who were four young people from Bilbao and Durango, two of them minors, reported that “they no longer had the strength”, which were made to the sea from Puntal Beach half an hour before, with the intention of crossing the canal to Santoña, without taking into account the strong current between the two shores or that the first minutes of the night occurred.
The nocturnity discouraged and disoriented them, with hardly any forces to continue rowing, believing that they would end up being dragged by the offshore stream, it being vital for them to be located by the civil guards of the Maritime Service at that time. The young people insistently appreciated the speed and skill of the agents in their rescue.
Minutes after the rescue, they were transferred to the Local Police of Santoña and ground patrols of the Civil Guard, where they were assisted. All four people are currently in good health.
The next day, the Provincial Maritime Service of Cantabria, continuing with the days of protection of the aforementioned World Championship, received notice of 112 where they warned that a vulture was in the water in the area of Islares (Cantabria) and could not leave between the rocks.
The auxiliary rubber of the Guadalhorce River was deployed, due to the difficulty of access to the rocky coastal area where the vulture was located in the water. The civil guards managed to rescue the bird that was very weakened due to the efforts to try to access the crags to the mainland.
The rapid action of the agents and their ability to capture it without damage, managed to save the animal from drowning, being delivered to the Service of Montes Cantabria for its transfer and recovery in the Nature Park of Cabárceno.
