- No vehicle intended for this purpose can be older than 16 years at the beginning of the course
- The school bus is the first road safety collective without deaths in traffic accidents since 2012
November 18, 2024. The Provincial Traffic Headquarters today begins a special campaign to control and monitor school transportation that will last until Friday, September 22, and in which the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard will control about 100 buses.
During these days, more than 200 agents of the Civil Guard will check the documentation related to the necessary authorizations for the provision of the service, the technical conditions of the vehicle itself, the qualification and driving license of the professionals, as well as their driving and rest times and the presence of risk factors, overspeed, alcohol consumption and other drugs, distraction or use of security systems, among others.
The General Directorate of Traffic’s Guide, “At School Always Safe”, points out that 90% of traffic accidents with children that occur in connection with school transport to school take place at the time of getting in or out of the vehicle, or just in the immediate moments and, in many cases, are atrocities caused by a distraction.
Other risk factors linked to school bus transport are linked to speed, distractions and the use of seat belts. Speed and distractions are the main causes of accidents involving school transport vehicles.
Thus, since 2007 all coaches must have restraint systems installed from the moment of registration. A minor without any type of retention multiplies by five the chances of suffering fatal injuries. Nine out of ten serious or fatal child injuries could have been avoided if a restraining device had been used.
No deaths since 2012
The school bus, which can never be older than sixteen years when it is intended for the transport and transfer of school travelers under 16 years of age, is the first road safety collective without deaths in traffic accidents since 2012.
Safe school roads
In the current school year, 103 schools in the Region of Murcia have registered the STARS project, a European initiative that encourages and rewards schools that promote sustainable and safe travel for their students, both on foot and by bicycle.
Last year there were 64 registered centers, and 21 of them obtained accreditation for the actions carried out to favor their students to move to the center in a healthier, safer and sustainable way.
