March 14, 2023. The Demarcation of Coasts in the Region of Murcia Murcia is currently removing the remains of a anchorage that does not have title of occupation of the public sea-land domain in the area of La Azohía.
So far it has removed more than 25 tons of all types of belongings, dead weights of concrete, voluminous elements of plastic, chains, steel cables, ropes…, which were deposited on the seabed of an area with remarkable environmental values, partially colonized by oceanic posidonia and which is part of the marine reserve of Cabo Tiñoso, adjacent to spaces belonging to the Natura 2000 Network.
This work is part of a series of actions that the Demarcation of Coasts has been carrying out in Murcia for years to try to control the proliferation of unauthorized mooring areas in different parts of the coast.
In 2008 and 2009, the Autonomous Community drew up a document entitled “Strategic Lines for the Management of Sports Ports in the Region of Murcia”, in which it considered remedying the deficit of mooring points in the Region through the expansion of existing sports ports with low environmental impact solutions and the construction of new ports and dry marinas.
As no concrete actions have been developed to implement the intentions reflected in this document, the mooring areas have been consolidating and growing since then, causing environmental afflictions, such as damage to marine species and habitats caused by restraint systems, probable spills of bilge waters or accidental spills of fuel or lubricants.
The absence of contingency plans or of means and resources such as containment barriers, cloths, bags and absorbent barriers or the risks associated with the drift of boats due to storms make the consent of the administrations to the permanence of these unregulated mooring areas undesirable.
The planning or management of new anchorage areas, sports ports or dry marinas that provide solutions to the problems caused by uncontrolled anchorages of boats is not a competence of the Demarcation of Coasts, but it must be the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia that proposes economically viable and environmentally sustainable alternatives to solve the problems generated by these occupations at sea.
In the event that the installation of a controlled anchorage is proposed, the Coastal Demarcation would limit itself to processing the title of occupation of the public marine-terrestrial domain and collect the relevant reports of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, corresponding city council and other bodies such as Captaincy Maritima and State Ports, in addition to the mandatory report of the General Directorate of the Coast and the Sea on compatibility with the marine strategy, in compliance with the Law of Protection of the Marine Environment. As long as these reports are favourable, the requested funding polygons could be authorised.
In future campaigns similar actions will continue in other areas of the coast of the Region of Murcia with the intention of reversing the damage caused and that the users of anchorage boats themselves become aware of the damage that is generated by the occupation of a public space without any type of security measures.
