The number of unemployed people registered at the Public Service of State Employment (SEPE) Office in Melilla, at the end of May, stands at 8,026. These are 236 people less than the previous month (-2.86%) and 507 unemployed less than a year ago (-5.94%).
The Provincial Director of the SEPE, Jorge Vera, who together with the Delegate of the Government, Sabrina Moh, has appeared before the media, has pointed out that a total of 84 people correspond to the Employment Plans implemented by the Government Delegation, while the remaining 152 people in which unemployment has been reduced without the direct linkage of these active employment policies.
By economic sectors, although all of them experience a drop in the number of unemployed, it is the Services sector that has reduced the number of claimants the most with 159 fewer people. In the Construction Sector there are 35 fewer unemployed; 28 fewer employees as far as the former unemployed are concerned, 13 fewer unemployed in Industry and one less unemployed in the Agriculture sector.
With regard to Social Security data, the number of participants stood at 25,100, representing an increase of 214 (0.86%) compared to the previous month and 322 more participants (1.3%) compared to May 2024. Specifically, in the General System there are 20,668 affiliates; 4,354 affiliates in the Autonomous System; and 77 affiliates in the Sea System.

As for the number of contracts that have materialized over the past month, the figure amounts to 1,373, which is 15 more than in April (1.1%) and 164 more than a year ago (13.56%).
The Provincial Director of SEPE has highlighted the fact that out of the total number of recruitments 570 have been indefinite, which means 41.5%, following the same line as what happens in the national average.
“Indefinite hiring is maintained month by month above 40% of hiring, which makes contracts much more stable, which was one of the objectives of this Government,” he said and recalled that before the labor reform indefinite hiring did not exceed 8%.
As Vera has detailed, in terms of registered unemployment, according to sex, women with 5,219 unemployed, represent 65.03% of the total, compared to the 2,807 unemployed men in our city, which represents 34.97%. And, as far as minors under the age of 25 are concerned, there are 775 unemployed in Melilla.
With regard to unemployment benefits, in the autonomous city there are 2,377 beneficiaries either of contributory benefit (1,144 beneficiaries), Allowance (1,128 beneficiaries) or Active Insertion Income (105 beneficiaries) and the average amount received per beneficiary is 1,004 euros per month.
National data
The head of the Provincial Directorate of the SEPE has also echoed the national data, and has highlighted that in Spain “the pace of employment grows by 9.3% six times more than Germany and five times more than France”.
“The Government of Spain is carrying out job creation policies that are being extraordinary,” he said and stressed that “we are at the forefront of Europe in this regard,” and stressed that unemployment is for the first time, since 2008, below the 2.5 million people unemployed.
“This is an exceptional fact”, he acknowledged and pointed out that it is 6% less than in May of the previous year and that it is also reduced in seasonally adjusted terms, while unemployment is reduced in all sectors of activity.
In this regard, Vera has indicated that, throughout the country, the number of registered unemployed has decreased by 57,835 people compared to the previous month (-2.30%).
The registered unemployment has thus reached 2,454,883 and lowered the barrier of two and a half million for the first time since July 2008. With respect to the same month of the previous year, unemployment has fallen by 152,967 people (-5.87%). It is also reduced in seasonally adjusted terms by 12,250 people.
As for unemployment by economic sectors, unemployment fell in all of them in May. In this way it is reduced in Services by 42,930 people (-2.36%), in Construction by 5,562 people (-2.99%), in Industry by 4,574 people (-2.35%) and in Agriculture by 2,259 (-2.77%). Also, the group Sin Empleo Anterior registered 2,510 people unemployed less (-1.07%).
In terms of unemployment by sex and age, female unemployment fell in May by 29,066 women (-1.92%) and the total number of unemployed remains at 1,486,421, its lowest level since October 2008. The male reduced the barrier of the million unemployed and stood at 968,462, falling by 28,769 people (-2.88%) in relation to the month of April.
For its part, unemployment among young people under 25 years of age fell in May by 6,426 people (-3.62%) compared to the previous month. The total is 171,003, the lowest figure in the historical series in this group.
The total number of new contracts registered during the month of May has been 1,328,983. Of these, 552,697 employment contracts are of an indefinite nature. They represent 41.59% of all contracts in the new tonic of job stability.
And in terms of unemployment benefits, the number of beneficiaries available at the end of the month was 1,515,513. The coverage rate of the unemployment protection system during the month of April 2025 has been 74.06%. That’s 20 percentage points more than a decade ago.
