The Provincial Director of Education, Elena Fernández Treviño, has encouraged the students of the city to participate in the prizes ‘Living, Feeling and Telling Democracy: Spain in freedom. 50 years’, convened by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports.
Works must be presented that value democracy, knowledge and strengthening of the rights and freedoms on which coexistence in Spain is articulated, as well as the rejection of dictatorships and any form of oppression. The outstanding projects will be disseminated at the national level and will receive institutional recognition for their contribution to democratic education.
As the Provincial Director explained, the objectives of this contest are “to promote among students fundamental democratic values, freedom, equality, pluralism and citizen participation”. In addition, it aims to “encourage critical reflection on the meaning of democracy and its importance in today’s society, while stimulating the creativity of students through projects that express their vision of democracy,” he said.
Among the topics suggested are, for example, Human Rights in democracy and dictatorships, citizen participation, voting and its importance in party democracy or the current role of social networks in promoting democracy.
In the words of Fernández Treviño, “this initiative reinforces the Ministry’s commitment to an education in values, training young people aware of their role in the construction of a more just, participatory and democratic society.”
