The IES ‘Juan Antonio Fernández Pérez’ has hosted this afternoon the awards of the III Philosophical Olympiad of Melilla, which in this edition have had the participation of a hundred students from the different educational centers of the city.
An edition that has had four modalities: Dissertation, for Baccalaureate; moral dilemma, for fourth grade of ESO, and photography and video, for all educational levels from fourth grade of ESO.
The winners of the different modalities will travel this Thursday to Mallorca to represent Melilla in the national phase of the Philosophical Olympiad in which they will be measured with the champions of the different Autonomous Communities.
The Provincial Director of Education, Elena Fernández Treviño, who attended the event and participated in the awards ceremony, congratulated the winners, as well as the teaching team and the center itself for hosting the Philosophical Olympiad.
Fernández Treviño conveyed his congratulations to the group of professors that made this Olympics possible and highlighted the role played by Professor Alba Velázquez, while congratulating all the professors of philosophy, from all the centers, “who have been at the side of these students, also teaching them critical thinking and promoting philosophical matter.”
Good response
The promoter of the Olympics in Melilla and professor of philosophy of the IES ‘Juan Antonio Fernández Pérez’, Alba Velázquez, thanked the participation of the students who “have responded very well despite the fact that it is a relatively new Olympics”.
Thus, she has valued the fact that students “dedicate their time to come to make a reflection, a dissertation, to resolve a dilemma, to come here one afternoon, to get involved in these spaces that we create for them, the truth that I am satisfied with”, and she has recognized her satisfaction for the good response that this type of initiatives are having.
Velázquez explained that at the national level they are going for edition number XIII and recalled that at the local level it was possible to start the first edition three years ago thanks, among other things, to the collaboration of Elena Fernández Treviño, who then held the City Council of Education, as well as the teachers who have been involved in carrying out this initiative.
In any case, he has pointed out that, every year, participation at the local level is improving and he has shown his desire that Melilla can win some prize in the national phase. “It would be great,” he said.
