The month of September, historically, has meant an increase in the number of unemployed registered by the end of the contracts of the service sector that occurs with the end of the summer period and this year has not been an exception. According to the data released this morning by the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy, Melilla has closed the month with 8,735 job seekers, 299 more.
The Provincial Director of the State Public Employment Service (SEPE), Jorge Vera, has pointed out that, compared to what happened in September 2023, where unemployment grew by more than half a thousand people, there has been a much lower increase in unemployment this month. “Policies to stabilize employment are being noticed and have a positive impact on the labor market,” he said.
The fact is that, by sector, most of the unemployment that has been recorded comes from the field of Services, with a total of 231 people. In fact, both the Agriculture and Construction sectors have registered a slight decline, with -3 and -5 unemployed, respectively.
Social Security registered 24,350 members in August in Melilla, which means a decrease of 225 members, being the General System in which the largest number of members are reduced (-218), followed by the Autonomous Ones (-5) and the Sea (-2).
43.4% of undefined contracts
Last September in our city a total of 1,540 contracts were carried out, which means 357 more (30.18%) than during the month of August and also a better year-on-year figure, with 28 more contracts (1.85%).
Of the contracts signed during the month of September, 669 are indefinite, which represents 43.4% of the total. The head of this body in our city recalled that, before the approval of the Labor Reform by the Executive presided over by Pedro Sánchez, indefinite contracts accounted for 8% of the total.
As far as unemployment benefits are concerned, in the autonomous city there are 3,134 beneficiaries either of contributory benefit (1,285 beneficiaries), Allowance (1,660 beneficiaries) or Active Insertion Income (189 beneficiaries) and the average amount received per beneficiary is 956.8 euros/month.
National data
The head of the Provincial Directorate of the SEPE has also referred to the national data, where the number of registered unemployed people has increased by 3,164 (0.12%) compared to the previous month, with the lowest monthly increase since 2007, except for the months affected by the Covid.
The total is 2,575,285 people, the lowest figure in a month of September since 2007. In the last 12 months, year-on-year unemployment has fallen by 147,183 people (-5.41%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the registered unemployment has fallen by 22,729 people.
By economic sectors, with respect to August, the registered unemployment recorded a sharp decrease in Construction with 4,856 people unemployed less (-2.40%), in Agriculture 1,515 people (-1.73%) and Industry 1,365 people (-0.67%). It increases in Services 4,351 people (0.24%) and also the collective Without Previous Employment 6,549 people (2.79%).
In year-on-year terms, it is in the Services sector that the greatest reduction in unemployment is recorded, with 97,943 fewer unemployed women and men compared to last year, followed by Agriculture, with almost 14,000 fewer unemployed people, Industry, with 13,430 people and Construction, with 12,484 fewer people.
