At the end of May, the number of unemployed persons registered with the Public Service of State Employment (SEPE) of Melilla has decreased by 151 persons (-1.73%) compared to the previous month. In this way, the registered unemployment has been reduced to 8,533 people in our city.
The Provincial Director of the SEPE, Jorge Vera, in a public appearance, reported this half-day of the data in our city and explained that, by economic sector, the largest decrease has occurred in the services sector, where there has been a decrease of 172 unemployed.
With regard to Social Security data, the number of participants increased by 228 (+0.93%), raising the figure to 24,778 participants in Melilla. In particular, affiliation increases by 202 people in the general regime and 26 in self-employed, while the sea regime was unchanged from last month.

In his statement to the media, the Provincial Director of the SEPE has highlighted the fact that of the 1,209 recruitments that took place last May, 536 have been indefinite, which means 44.3%, a percentage point above the national average.
As Vera has detailed, in terms of registered unemployment, it refers, according to sex, to women with 5,464 unemployed, which represents 64.03%, compared to the 3,069 unemployed men that there are, which represents 35.96%. And, as far as minors under the age of 25 are concerned, there are 714 unemployed.
As far as unemployment benefits are concerned, in the autonomous city there are 3,025 beneficiaries either of contributory benefit (1,266 beneficiaries), Allowance (1,941 beneficiaries) or Active Insertion Income (175 beneficiaries) and the average amount received per beneficiary is 977 euros/month.
National data
The head of the Provincial Directorate of the SEPE has also echoed the national data, where there has been a general fall in unemployment in 58,650 people in all sectors.
In this way, the registered unemployment has stood at 2,607,850 people, the lowest figure in a month of May since 2008 and in a context of historical record of employment in which, in year-on-year terms, unemployment has fallen by 131,260 people (-4.79%).
By economic sectors with respect to the month of April, registered unemployment fell in the Services sectors by 44,467 (-2.33%), Construction 3,867 (-1.89%), Industry 3,715 (-1.78%) and Agriculture 2,249 (-2.40%). They also fell among the group Sin Empleo Anterior decreased by 4,352 (-1.76%).
Female unemployment fell by 31,954 women (-1.99%) in the month of May to a total of 1,570,884 and male unemployment stood at 1,036,966 as it fell by 26,696 men (-2.51%).
Compared to May 2023, male unemployment fell by 47,117 (-4.35%) and female unemployment fell by 84,143 (-5.08%). Unemployment among young people under 25 years of age fell in May by 9,007 people (-4.79%) compared to the previous month, a rate that doubles that of older people of this age reference.
