The number of unemployed in our city at the end of August stands at 7,892, according to data released this morning by the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy. There are 276 more unemployed than the previous month, a figure closely linked to the completion of much of the contracts of the Employment Plan 2022-2023 that took place last month.
The Delegate of the Government, Sabrina Moh, recalled that in August, unemployment usually increases due to the seasonality of the activity. However, it has highlighted that there are 2,436 fewer unemployed than when Pedro Sánchez came to the government.
Regarding the number of members of Social Security, the highest representative of the Government of Spain in our city has also pointed out that the figure is above 25,000, with a total of 25,195 members, which is 1,990 more than a year ago.
The head of the Government Delegation also referred to the contracting that took place during the month of August and that is that, of the 1,178 that have been signed during the month 527 are indefinite, which means 44.7% of them.
“Month after month we see the positive effects of the labor reform approved by the Executive of Pedro Sánchez,” he said and it is, as he recalled, before the same indefinite hiring was around 8%.
With regard to benefits, a total of 2,681 melillenses receive some type of benefit, whether it be the contributory benefit - 1,174 beneficiaries -, a subsidy - 1,314 beneficiaries - or the Active Insertion Income (RAI) - 193 beneficiaries - and the average amount received per beneficiary amounts to 927.9 euros per month.
As for the Temporary Employment Regulation Dossiers, at the end of August, there were in our city a total of 3 companies affected by one, and 6 workers, all of them men in partial ERTE.
National data
In terms of data for the country as a whole, the number of unemployed persons registered at the end of August rose by 24,826 persons in relation to the previous month (0.93%).
This increase is lower than those produced since 2016 and is well below the average of the historical series. For 25 years, unemployment has increased in August due to the seasonal cycles of the production model. In fact, in seasonally adjusted terms, the registered unemployment fell by 23,373 people.
The total number of unemployed has stood at 2,702,700. This is the lowest figure this month since 2008.
In year-on-year terms, registered unemployment has fallen by almost 222,000 people, which is a reduction of 7.6% compared to its value a year ago.
