The Ministry of Education and Professional Training (MEyFP) has called for grants for students with specific need of educational support for the academic year 2023-2024, as reported by the Provincial Director, Juan Ángel Berbel.
“Scholarships and study grants are one of the instruments that contribute most effectively to making the principle of equal opportunities possible,” said the head of the MEyFP in our city.
Thus, as explained, Royal Decree 117/2023 of 21 February, which establishes the income and family wealth thresholds and the amounts of scholarships and study grants for the academic year 2023-2024, and partially amends Royal Decree 1721/2007 of 21 December, which establishes the regime of personalized scholarships and study grants, “reflects the firm commitment of the Ministry of Education and Professional Training to the social dimension of education, which aims to ensure, through the scholarship policy, that no student abandons his studies, for economic reasons, thus ensuring social cohesion and equal opportunities.”
A group, he added, “that requires special protection for these effects is students with a specific need for educational support associated either with some type of disability or other disorders, or with a high intellectual capacity.”
This need, he pointed out, consists essentially of certain supports and educational attention or in activities complementary to regulated training.
That is why, from the General State Budget (PGE), aid has been called annually to help with the expenses that the education of the aforementioned students generates for their families, he explained.
Within this framework of continuity of the scholarship and study grants policy that has been developed in recent years, the call for grants and subsidies is made public for students with specific educational support needs for the next academic year 2023-2024, derived from disability, serious behavioral disorders or serious communication and language disorders, students with autism spectrum disorder and students with specific educational support needs associated with high intellectual abilities.
Subsidy of 400 euros
As Berbel has recalled, this call includes as a novelty a subsidy for additional expenses of a general nature derived from the schooling of students with specific educational support needs, which will have an amount of 400 euros, especially since “families with children who have these needs assume very significant additional costs to meet the vital requirements of their children, which, together with the current economic circumstances, requires extraordinary support, which will be added to the amounts already included in previous calls, resulting in a further increase of the aid with this subsidy”.
Students who do not exceed a certain income and/or family patrimony and who have a specific need for educational support derived from disability or serious behavioural disorders or serious communication and language disorders associated with special educational needs and who are studying in a specific centre, in a special education unit of a regular school or in a regular centre that schools students who have special educational needs, one of the non-university educational levels, may apply for assistance.
Likewise, students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and students with a specific need for educational support associated with high abilities may apply for assistance.
Applications for both grants and subsidies must be completed by means of the form accessible on the internet at the address www.educacionyfp.gob.es or through the MEyFP’s electronic headquarters at the address https://sede.educacion.gob.es.
The deadline for submitting applications will be extended from May 8, 2023 to September 20, 2023, inclusive.
The components of the grants and amounts are distributed among teaching, intercity transport, school canteen, school residence, transport for weekend transfer of internal students in special education centers, urban transport, books and didactic material, pedagogical or language re-education, fixed amount subsidy for general additional expenses, and/or amount associated with high capacities.
