On the occasion of March 8, the Coordination Unit Against Violence Against Women of the Government Delegation in Melilla joins the commemoration of International Women’s Day, ratifying its commitment to the achievement of full equality between men and women and to the construction of a society free of male violence.
As explained by the Head of the Coordination Unit Against Violence Against Women of the Government Delegation, Laura Segura, “as every year, on March 8, we again demand the need to continue moving towards a truly democratic society.”
“Although Spain has consolidated itself as one of the countries driving progress in gender equality, we must continue to move forward, accelerate progress and consolidate each of the achievements achieved,” he said.
In this regard, Segura has indicated that it is essential to keep in mind the great challenges ahead since the lives of women are still worse than those of men in the different areas of people’s lives.
Thus, it has referred to its reflection in the representation of the organs of greater political, judicial or economic power, social, sports and cultural participation, access to and promotion of employment, wages, job insecurity, the digital gender gap, pensions, the distribution of domestic work and care, the availability of time, the feminization of poverty and its serious consequences, the greater difficulty of access to basic resources to live and the greater vulnerability to exploitation and male violence.
A male violence that, “in its many forms, is the cruellest manifestation of inequality between women and men and that has meant that 1,192 women have been killed at the hands of their partners or former partners since 2003,” he recalled.
“If we build a society in equality and freedom, we help prevent the violence suffered by women and move towards a true democratic and just society,” Segura said.
