Melilla will be one of the main cities during the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), which will take place in the second half of this year 2023, since it will host the meeting of the Education Committee of the Council of the EU.
“This Government is focused on quality education and professional training and, therefore, it is very good news that our city will become the venue for this meeting,” said Government Delegate Sabrina Moh.
As explained by the highest representative of the Government of Spain in our city, during the Spanish Presidency activities and events will be developed both in Brussels and in different Spanish cities, by different Ministries. Specifically, in the field of education and training, the Ministry of Vocational Training (MEyFP) and the Ministry of Universities (MUNI) are finalizing the program of events that they will develop from July 1 to December 31 of this year.
Melilla, Zaragoza, Barcelona, Seville and Jerez de la Frontera will be the Spanish cities that will host educational activities during the Spanish Presidency of the EU.
Specifically, our city will be in charge of hosting the last Education Committee of the Council of the European Union in headquarters, also known as the Meeting of Education Advisors.
“It is about bringing together all the members of the Education Committee in the country that has presided over the Council of the European Union during that semester, that is, the Education Councillors of the various permanent representations of the 27 Member States to the EU (REPER-EU), as well as a delegation of the European Commission and another of the organizing ministries, MEyFP and MUNI,” he reported.
As Moh explained, it is a major event because it will close all the issues addressed during the semester in education before passing the witness to the Belgian Presidency. “It is the last event of the semester program of the Spanish Presidency in education and training and constitutes the event of reflection and closure in this matter,” he stressed.
Europe in Melilla
The meeting, which will take place in December, will also help half a hundred senior education officials to travel to Melilla and get to know this European city located in North Africa.
Thus, as Moh has advanced, our city will receive the delegations of the different member states; a delegation of the European Commission, among which will be representatives of the General Directorate of Education, Youth, Sport and Culture; a delegation of the Council of the EU, which will include representatives of the General Secretary of the Council and of the Legal Services of the Council; and a delegation of the Spanish Presidency, with 10 representatives of the MEyFP and the MINU, as well as 4 Spanish Education Councillors of the REPER-EU.
“In addition to the working sessions, hosting this meeting will help half a hundred people from all over Europe get to know our city at first hand, which is an example of coexistence, our gastronomy and our historical-cultural heritage,” he said.
In the opinion of the Delegate, the inclusion of Melilla as a venue for hosting one of the meetings within the Spanish Presidency of the EU is another sign of the support that the Executive of Pedro Sánchez are giving to our city.
