Listening to the sound of instruments from another era, some predecessors of current ones such as guitar or piano, is one of the attractions of the Orchestra of Professional Teachings dedicated to the baroque repertoire of the Professional Conservatory of Music Arturo Soria of Madrid that stars this week the campaign #TalentMadrid of the Government Delegation.
The orchestra includes many instruments of pulsed string such as the tierba, the archilaúd or a baroque guitar that are the ancestors of the instruments that today we know as guitar. The key is considered the ancestor of the piano, and the air motor organ but smaller in size than those of the churches serves to make chamber music. “We use instruments that no longer exist in a symphony orchestra because they are from another era, they were used in other historical periods,” says the conductor of this orchestra, Asís Márquez.
“Baroque music, historically, is the music belonging to the Baroque, indeed. As ancient music we already understand medieval, renaissance, baroque, etc. Classicism too. Let’s say that all that goes from 1750, Bach’s death and Classicism, onwards, we already consider classical romantic music, but the baroque as such is dedicated to the 17th and 18th centuries which is the repertoire in which we specialize,” he says.
About the Professional Conservatory of Music Arturo Soria
This Conservatory is one of the few in the Community of Madrid that has an ancient music department with many specialties among which are the key, clavicémbalo, organ, viola da gamba, flute de pico, instruments of pulsed string, etc.
From the compendium of these specialties, two instrumental groups are formed: the Renaissance chapel, for the first courses of professional teachings that are equivalent to 5th, 6th and 7th degree; and the Baroque orchestra that is formed by students of the last professional courses, before the higher degree.
The conservatory is the largest, with the largest number of students, the largest number of teachers and a number of specialties: flamenco music, ancient music, jazz music… all the symphonic specialties. “It is a privileged center that thanks to this influx of students and the work of so many teachers can have groupings of this quality,” emphasizes Assisi.
