The Community of Madrid was the fifth national destination most chosen by foreign tourists in the best April in history in Spain in number of international tourists and in spending levels, 20% above the pre-pandemic record.
In total, a total of 665,430 foreign tourists visited the region this month, which is 21.8% more than in April 2022, which places it as the second autonomy that grows more in number of visitors. This represents 9.2% of the total number of international tourist arrivals in Spain, leaving a cumulative figure so far this year of 2,241,830 million travelers, which is equivalent to an increase of 47% per year.
In addition, Madrid was also the fifth autonomous community in which they spent the most money, up to 1,075 million euros, 29.1% more than in April last year. This puts average spending per tourist at €1,615 (6.0% more) and average daily spending at €336, 10.9 more than a year earlier, at an average journey time of 4.8 days (-4.4% per year).
These data are extracted from the surveys of tourism movements (Frontur) and tourism expenditure (Egatur) released today by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
Nationally, Spain received 7.2 million international tourists in April, 18.5% more than in the same month of 2022, who spent 8.480 billion euros, 22.7% more than a year before. These figures represent a historical record in number of visitors and volume of expenditure: 8.480 billion euros, 22.7% more than a year ago and 20.2% compared to the best pre-pandemic data.
In the cumulative of the first four months of the year, Spain has received almost 21 million arrivals, which represents a growth of 32.4% compared to last year; during this four-month period, total expenditure was 25,681 million euros, 36.6% than in the same period last year and 14.5% above 2019.
For the Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Héctor Gómez, “these are extraordinary data that demonstrate, once again, that Spain is at the forefront of world tourism, that the tourist recovery is complete and that the Government’s policies work, both those related to specialized and quality employment and the aid for the modernization of the sector, are bearing fruit”.
Average expense and daily increase
The average expenditure per tourist in April stood at 1,172 euros, with an annual increase of 3.6%. For its part, the average daily expenditure also increased by 11.6%, up to 173 euros.
The average travel time of international tourists was 6.8 days, a figure similar to that of the same month last year. The majority stay among tourists in April is between four and seven nights, with more than 3.7 million travelers choosing this modality and an annual increase of 18.3%.
USA, the fastest growing visitor country
By country, the United Kingdom, which continues to lead the tourist emitting market, with 1.4 million tourists visiting in April, has experienced significant growth (8.7%) compared to the same month of 2022.
France and Germany are the next countries with the most tourists visiting Spain, providing more than a million visitors each. Tourists from France grew in April by 26.9% in annual rates and those from Germany by 2.0%.
Among the other countries of residence, it is worth noting the annual growth of tourists from the United States (60.7% more than in April 2022), which is the country that grows the most this month, Italy (29% more) and Portugal (29.6%). In the cumulative of the first four months, visitors from the US have increased by 75.4%, being the issuing country where the influx of tourists has grown the most compared to a year ago.
