More than 1,340 elderly people from La Rioja attended last year the 45 talks given by the Civil Guard and National Police within the Greater Security Plan. Promoted by the Secretary of State for Security of the Ministry of the Interior in 2010 and developed by the Civil Guard and the National Police, the Greater Security Plan sets the general objective of preventing the most important security risks for the elderly, promoting their confidence in the security forces and improving their response in their actions.
Since its approval 13 years ago, 551 talks have been given to 19,580 elderly people. In these meetings, the Civil Guard and the National Police listen to their concerns, contributions, fears and needs. The agents who give the talks adapt the contents to the urban or rural environment of the localities to which they move, as well as to the centers to which they go - association, day center, residence.
On the other hand, within this Greater Security Plan, other preventive actions are also foreseen in La Rioja, such as the increase of patrols in the immediate vicinity of banking entities and centers used by the elderly, mainly at the beginning of the month coinciding with the entry of pensions, and sanitary aids and accompaniments, carried out mainly in rural areas by the Civil Guard.
Issues of interest to seniors
The basic contents that are addressed are: scams; robberies, thefts and abuse of trust; maltreatment of elderly people and way of denouncing it; security tips: general, at home, in public places and on trips. Contents related to ATMs, counterfeit currency, measures for their physical security in the home and telephone scams have been added.
In addition, in recent times, cybercrime and the crimes of each moment are reported, such as the method of hugging to steal necklaces or give a hand for the watch.
The talks give security advice and facilitate the participation of the attendees, as well as stage with them the most used criminal methods and expose real cases that have recently been suffered by the elderly so that they really know the dangers to which they are exposed.
The level of satisfaction of the attendees is very high as they feel grateful for the proximity and attention given to them by the agents of the National Police and Civil Guard.
