The Military Emergency Unit (UME), under the Ministry of Defense, will deploy from June 2 its Balearic detachments for the campaign to fight forest fires, which will last until September 30. This military body acts in forest fires as a support unit to the civil authorities in the resolution of this type of emergency.
In the case of Balears, the UME will deploy its emergency troops in June at the Jaime II Military Base in Palma; at the facilities of the Consell de Eivissa in Sa Coma and at the San Isidro Quartering in Maó. These equipment consist of column maintenance and preparation personnel in case of activation, as well as machinery and fire-fighting tools, and specialized means of transport. Specifically, in the archipelago, the unit will have 7 self-pump vehicles and one feeder, in addition to 2 transmission vehicles, 2 light vehicles and two cargo trucks.
The Emergency Intervention Battalion III, based in Valencia, occupies semi-fixed detachments on the islands during the firefighting campaign, in areas far from its main bases, but within its area of responsibility. The government delegate in the Balearic Islands, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, underlines the essential role of this unit in carrying out its important function of supporting emergency interventions that occur in the islands.
