The Government approves the purchase of land from Defensa to build some 20,000 affordable homes in 36 municipalities
The Council of Ministers, at its meeting today, has approved allocating more disused Ministry of Defense soils to enhance urban development and the promotion of affordable housing. Specifically, it has given the green light to the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) to acquire, through the Public Land Entity (SEPES), up to 8.25 million m2 of public land owned by Defensa to raise, in an estimated way, around 20,000 affordable homes through 50 actions. The estimated budget of the operation is around 514.3 million euros (without VAT).
Thus, the Government has entrusted Mitma, the Ministry of Finance and Public Service and the Ministry of Defense to process the legal instruments necessary to carry out the land sale operation between the Institute of Housing, Infrastructure and Defense Equipment (Invied) and SEPES, for its subsequent development for residential uses.
The initiative, framed in the Affordable Rental Housing Plan (PVAA), will make it possible to have public land in 36 municipalities spread throughout the Spanish geography for the development of public protection housing and thus contribute to guaranteeing the constitutional right to enjoy decent and adequate housing and that this availability is balanced throughout the territory. After the acquisition by SEPES, the entity will prepare the soils to be urbanizable and facilitate residential construction through public-private formulas that involve the cession of the soil.
The Defense lands included in this initiative are distributed in municipalities of Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Cantabria, Canary Islands, Catalonia, Castilla La Mancha, Castilla y León, Ceuta, Extremadura, Galicia, La Rioja, Madrid, Murcia, Melilla and Valencia.
