The Government’s ‘Senior Cinema’ Program allocates in this edition about 240,000 euros to finance in Galicia an initiative that allows people over 65 years old to buy cinema tickets at a reduced price one day a week. This amount is distributed among the 17 rooms adhered in Galicia with the aim of surpassing 45,000 spectators this year, consolidating the success of an initiative that the Ministry of Culture promotes since 2023.
The funds granted are 20% higher than those granted by the same program in the past year and it allows to meet the expectations of growth of viewers expected for this edition. In fact, in 2025 16 of the 18 rooms adhered in Galicia last year exhausted the credits at the end of the year, before which the Ministry approved a subsidy supplement that raised the final amount to the 200,000 euros finally granted.
This year there are 17 rooms that offer this discount on Tuesday sessions: 7 in the province of A Coruña (Cinesa Las Cancelas, Cinesa Marineda City, Cantones Cines, Duplex, Juncal, Numax Cines Compostela); 4, in the province of Lugo (Cines Vivero, Cinelandia, Cines Cristal and Yelmo Cines Las Termas); and 6, in the province of Pontevedra (Tamberlick, Ocine Premium Gran Via, Minicines Central, Multicines Norte, Yelmo Cines Vigo and Vies).
In these cinemas, people over 65 will be able to benefit from this discount every Tuesday until the month of June 2027. In Galicia, more than 700,000 people are potential beneficiaries of this program. The continuity of the program responds to the good results of the previous editions, as well as the determination of the Ministry of Culture to support the exhibition halls as you are key in the film chain and vehicle of access to cultural diversity.
Likewise, ‘Cine Sénior’ aims to protect and respect the right of older people to participate in the social and cultural sphere, something fundamental for an active and healthy lifestyle.
Balance of previous editions
The program ‘Cine Sénior’ received a positive reception in all previous editions. Second, the data of the Federation of Spanish Cinemas (FECE), until December 31, 2025, 1,559,438 spectators attended the cinemas, a figure similar to the total that attended during the 2024 campaign (1,690,821). In Galicia, the data indicates that about 43,000 spectators participated in this initiative.
This year the Ministry plans to exceed this amount according to the assistance data collected in the first months of this year. With regard to the film elections, the provisional data of the third edition placed Spanish cinema as the preferred choice for users of ‘Cine Sénior’. Thus, eight of the ten most viewed films were Spanish, occupying the top three positions. In this way, ‘Cine Sénior’ reinforces not only in cinemas and spectators, but also has an impact on Spanish producers, distributors and creators.
