The subdelegate of the Government in Ourense, Eladio Santos, visited this morning the Service of Management of Penalties and Alternative Measures of Ourense, a multidisciplinary administrative unit dependent on the Penitentiary Administration, which has as its purpose the execution of measures and penalties alternative to deprivation of liberty. The functions of this service are, principally, the control of the performance of the work for the benefit of the community, of the suspension of sentences of deprivation of liberty that entail the fulfilment of a certain intervention program or of the judicial measure of probation; in response to the reeducational, exemplary and integrative essence of this service.
All this through its professionals, who are responsible for monitoring compliance, as well as the development of workshops and programs; and the collaborating entities, which welcome the realization of the latter.
In this sense, the Service of Management of Penalties and Alternative Measures of Ourense has the collaboration of the different municipalities of the province. Currently there are people complying with this type of alternative measures in 30 municipalities in Ourense, mainly performing cleaning and maintenance work, and auxiliary and support tasks.
In addition, there is also the collaboration of other public and private institutions, in which some inmates comply with the agreed measure, such as the San Rosendo Foundation, Caritas, Red Cross, Project Home or the Pereiro de Aguiar Penitentiary Center, among others.
According to data from 2024, the four officials attached to this service (a head of service, a psychologist, an administrative and a worker) carried out the management of the alternative measures imposed on 952 people in our province.
