The deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas put in value the heroism demonstrated by the neighbors of Carnota coinciding with the 59th anniversary of the sinking of the frigate of the Spanish Navy ‘Ariete’ (D-36) off the coast of the town of Coruña. He did so during a visit to the multipurpose ship of the A61 Navy ‘Carnota’ in the port of Brens, in Cee, which made a stop in the area as part of the acts for this anniversary and which receives the name of this heroic locality.
The deputy delegate, who was accompanied during the visit of the mayors of Carnota, Corcubión and Dumbría and the mayor of Cee, representatives of the Navy, the Security Forces and Bodies and two of the supervisors, highlighted the involvement of the population in the rescue tasks of the 168 crew members of the ‘Ariete’, who managed to get them out alive from the sea in the middle of a strong storm, “facts that forever marked the history of the town of Carnota, which since then has the title of ‘Very Humanitarian’ in recognition of the value shown by its inhabitants,” recalled Rivas.
In this regard, he took the opportunity to pay tribute to the daily work carried out by the military of the Navy, as well as the work carried out by other state agencies, such as Salvamento Maritimo, to guarantee the safety of people at sea. “A silent work but which, just as Carnota’s neighbours did heroically in 1966, saves many lives,” said the deputy delegate.
Not an act, which was preceded by a visit to the ship by the students of the schools of Carnota and El Pindo and the IES Lamas de Castelo, the subdelegate also highlighted the investment effort of the Government in the province, “with more than 7 billion euros for the new frigates of the F-110 series and the modernization of the fleet of the Navy.”
Open House Day
Lo La61 ‘Carnota’ is a multipurpose vessel that performs towing missions, maritime surveillance, logistical transport and support the other naval units. It owes its name to an initiative presented in 2021 by a neighbor of Carnota and member of the National Police supported by the City Council and the Subdelegation of the Government to pay tribute to the bravery of the population in the work of the destroyer ‘Ariete’. It is also the first ship in the A60 series, which also receives the name of ‘Carnota’, and of which the A62 ‘Cartagena’ is also part, to which two other units are expected to be added in the future.
To commemorate the visit of the ‘Carnota’ to the town, the Navy today organizes an open day from 15.30 to 18 hours so that people who wish can visit the interior of the ship.
