The subdelegate of the Government in Ourense, Eladio Santos, met this morning with the mayors of A Gudiña, Néstor Ogando; A Veiga, Juan Anta; A Mezquita, Rafael Pérez; Viana do Bolo, Andrés Montesinos; and with the councilor of Vilariño de Conso, Melisa Macía; in order to address with all of them the implementation of broadband in the Region of Viana, thanks to the UNICO Program and the PEBA-NGA Plan of the Government. The provincial head of Telecommunications, Enrique San Martín, was also present at the meeting.
The goal of both projects is for 100% of the population to have broadband by 2025. For this, from 2018 to 2021, the Government mobilized more than 1.120 M€ within the PEBA-NGA Plan of the Ministry of Digital Transformation and Public Function, in order to achieve the implementation of the new generation broadband. It also allocated, from its inception and until 2023, 2,000 M€ within the UNICO-Broadband Program of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Enterprise.
Both initiatives, funded by the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, brought ultra-fast broadband to more than 4 million homes, drastically reducing the connectivity gap between rural and urban. At the meeting, the subdelegate and the provincial head of Telecommunications detailed the progress of these projects in our community.
In this sense, between 2022 and 2023, thanks to the UNICO Program, more than 174,000 Galician homes have ultra-fast broadband. All of them belong to white zones, that is, those regions that have a connection less than 30 Mbs. To achieve this objective, a state contribution of more than 70 M€ was necessary for our community during those two years.
