On Wednesday, the government delegate, Pedro Blanco, held a meeting with the mayor of Sada, Benito Portela, together with the councilor for Works and Environment, Fernando Fariña, in which they addressed the progress in the project of structural improvements to reduce the risk of flooding of the Maior and Fontoira rivers as they pass through the urban center of the town.
During the meeting, Pedro Blanco discussed with the councilor the needs to carry out this initiative and undertook to transfer the demands of the City Council to the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.
Specifically, the area of potential flood risk of Sada has an approximate length of 600 meters and coincides with the final stretch of the rivers Maior (403 meters) and Fontoira (211 meters), within the villa. In this area, there were significant floods in 2016 that caused numerous material damage.
The initiative aims to reduce the risk of flooding by increasing the hydraulic capacity of the river while recovering the environmental conditions of the beds. Through several actions, the environmental quality of river environments will be improved to the maximum possible extent of the Maior and Fontoira rivers as natural habitats. In addition, it is intended to carry out a river cultural restoration that recovers the intangible values of the rivers and puts value on the presence of these beds in the life and history of the municipality.
