Pontevedra, September 18, 2024.- Abel Losada attended today the opening ceremony of the integral reform of the Dar González school and company of the Education Council, Román Rodríguez, and the president of the Provincial Council, #Luís López, recognizing all the people who participated in the implementation and execution of works that he defined as “the best tribute to public education” and to the unique figure of the Pontevedresa professor, politician and cultural activist.
Losada stressed that the Government of Spain financed the works in full, valued at just over 1.7 million euros within the framework of the subsidies granted by the Ministry of Transport and Environment (MITMA) in 2022 to the local administration within the Public Buildings Rehabilitation Plan (PIREP). The two calls for this plan left in the province of Pontevedra a total of 22.6 million euros to finance more than a dozen municipal projects and the Provincial Council itself. The deputy delegate of the Government of Spain said that it is time to recognize the decision of the Government for the European funds Next Generation to reach the municipalities. “Supporting the local administration by financing their works is to improve the quality of life through the administrative level closest to the people,” he said. Losada took the floor to highlight the role played by his predecessor at the head of the Subdelegation, Maica Larriba, to publicize the various state calls, which explains why the province of Pontevedra was the one that obtained the most funds in the PIREP calls. In addition, he valued the “courageous political decision” of the former president of the Provincial Council, Carmela Silva, so that the Provincial Council would assume, even if it were alone, the costly works of reform of the Dar González and then negotiate its transfer to the Ministry of Education, given that this public school is still attached to the Provincial Council. Thanks to the determination of Carmela Silva, he added, when the Ministry of Transport launched the first call for the PIREP, the Provincial Council had a mature project that achieved the state contribution of 1.7 million euros and was able to award them for an equivalent amount.
Abel Losada also applauded the work of the team of the current president of the Provincial Council, #Luís López, “for knowing how to take advantage of the legacy left by the previous government” and properly manage the execution of the work. In parallel, Abel Losada recognized the role of the school’s management team for having insisted on the need for these works and for having promoted, in his day, the change of name of the educational center, which was formerly called Principe Felipe School. In addition, he claimed the role of the Architecture team of the Provincial Council itself.
The subdelegate also turned the inaugural act into a tribute to the memory of Dar González, “a woman of anger, republican and progressive” who she defined as “a teacher above all”, but who had time to be a Councillor for Culture in Spain who took the first steps in Democracy and to link up with all the cultural initiatives in her heart. The works carried out with the funds of the state plan PIREP improved habitability and energy efficiency through the replacement of the roof, the reinforcement of the façade, the change of the exterior carpentry and the placement of photovoltaic panels.
It also gained in accessibility with the reform of two toilets and a bathroom to make it more accessible. Finally, a room was renovated to adapt it to the needs of people with functional diversity and the change of the elevator for a more accessible one.
