The Government Delegation in Galicia reports that 105,982 Galician women now receive supplements to reduce the gender gap in retirement pensions. This is reflected in the Balance Sheet “Complying”, published this August by the Government, and which reviews the commitments made by the Executive since the beginning of this legislature.
Specifically, the Balance Sheet states that 54,0151 women receive the old maternity supplement in their retirement pensions while another 51,941 women benefit from the gender gap reduction supplement, which the Government of Pedro Sánchez approved in addition to the previous one.
According to public data from the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, the average retirement pension of a woman in Galicia was revalued since 2019 by 34.4%, more than double that in the two previous legislatures (16% between 2012 and 2018). This revaluation includes the measure approved by the Government of Pedro Sánchez to reduce the gender gap in retirement pensions, in the form of a supplement that increases the amount of the pension of working women from the first child. This fact, together with the general revaluation policy, allowed the average retirement pension of women in Galicia to have grown 7.5 points above that of men, making it possible to reduce the difference between men and women.
Throughout the Government, it remains committed to improving the purchasing power of women pensioners, since they are the ones who mostly choose to reduce the hours worked to care for minors and other family members. This has an impact on the calculation of women’s pension compared to men’s. To give an example, between January and June 2024, of the 773 surpluses registered by the Social Security in Galicia for family care, 85% were granted to women compared to 15% granted to men.
For this year 2024, the supplement for the reduction of the gender gap in contributory pensions was set at 33.20 euros per month. It is the result of adding an additional 5% to the overall percentage of revaluation of the total pensions of 3.8%.
