The advancement of optical fiber in the province of Pontevedra continues with the UN-Broadband plan of the Government of Spain. The deputy delegate of the Government, Abel Losada, was supervising the deployment work in the parish of Dorrón, in Sanxenxo, accompanied by the deputy mayor Marcos Guisasola and the councilor María Deza and thanked the collaboration of the 61 municipalities of the province and the Diputación in the advancement of connectivity.
On this occasion he visited the works being carried out by the company Avatel, concessionaire of the call for the state subsidy of the *ÜNICO 2022-2023 Plan. The event was also attended by the delegate of the company Juan Manuel González, who explained that over the next few months he will guarantee the connection with fiber to the FTTH home with a minimum of 300 Megas of a total of 3,364 real estate units (homes or companies). The company is currently working on an axis that runs through Sanxenxo, Poio, Pontevedra (Lérez), Campo Lameiro and Cerfinger-Cotobade.
No City Council of Sanxenxo, in particular, will be connected at the end of June a total of 700 real estate units and throughout the year a total of 1,064. The calculations indicate that another 900 homes and/or company of Poio will benefit from connectivity and the rest by the area of the parish of Lérez in the direction of Campo Lameiro and Cerdigit-Cotobade from La Piolla.
Abel Losada stressed that the Government Subdelegation is carrying out a coordination work between the three companies that received state subsidies for the deployment of the plan in the province (Telefónica, Avatel and Red Abierta) and that they must have completed the deployment before December 2025. The Government also recalled the subdelegate, “guaranteeing connectivity through satellite link with Hispasat to homes that it is impossible to reach with the laying of optical fiber”.
The subdelegate also recalled that the subsidies of the UNI-Broadband Plan are focused on guaranteeing coverage in the so-called “white areas”, that is, those with less commercial interest and that no operator was assigned. In this way, the Government promotes the total connectivity of a territory as dispersed as the Galician and covers one of the objectives of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Spanish economy. “Over time, this effort will be valued, which places Spain at the head of Europe in the advancement of connectivity and which is a very clear commitment to digitization and the direct fight against the demographic challenge,” he said.
Unique Program in the province
The Digital Infrastructure for Cohesion Universalization Program (UNICO) is the framework initiative developed by the Government of Spain under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan to universalize access to ultra-fast broadband and 5G extension throughout the territory.
With an investment of more than €25 million in the province, the awarding companies of the three calls launched under this program have already connected a total of 623,000 companies and homes in the province to high-speed optical fiber, which means that 91% of real estate units throughout the province already have an ultra-fast Internet connection.
It is expected that before December 2025, the date on which the program ends, the total of 682,000 real estate units in the province of Pontevedra that until three years ago did not have access to this technology will be connected.
