The subdelegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, approached this skill to Brión, where she was received by its mayor, Pablo Lago Sanmartin, to make an institutional visit to the City Council where she held a meeting with its mayor and members of the municipal corporation, with the objective of supervising the actions carried out in this city council for the extension of the broadband network through the Single Plan.
The subdelegate recalled that the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service’s Universalization of Digital Infrastructures for Cohesion (UNICO) program serves to facilitate access to ultra-fast broadband connection and the extension of 5G to all municipalities in the community that lack this service.
On December 18, the Ministry announced the award of the Third Call for Broadband Projects. In this resolution the province of A Coruña was awarded the Rede Aberta, which must take broadband to 9,000 families and companies with a state investment of 4,635,637 euros (of the 5.8 of total investment).
Rivas indicated that the City of Brión is one of the beneficiaries of this plan that, through 144 projects, will facilitate broadband coverage in 451 homes and companies that previously did not have this service. This extension is made through calls for Government aid; the program includes three calls. The first one (2021) is already finished and the calls 2022-2023 are in full execution.
Thus, in the Single Plan 2022, Rede Aberta was awarded the execution of a total of 162 homes of which 53 are currently in operation. In the award of 2023 there are 259 contemplated dwellings of which 193 are already in service. Thus, there are a total of 421 homes awarded in these two calls, of which 241 are already executed, which represents 58.4% of the total committed.
With these awards, coverage is currently being given to the places of A Graña, Cornanda, Alfonsín, Goiáns, Ardións, Mato, Cristimil, Tourís, Nináns, Touris, Iglesia San Julián de Luaña, Vioxo de Arriba, Vioxo de Abaixo, Esparis, Posada, Vilar, Mourentáns, Forxán, Salaño Grande, Salaño Menor, A Gándara paredes, Cirro, Pazos and Fonte.
The deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, informed the mayor that in the coming months a company will intensify the work of deploying fiber for broadband access to the rest of the places of the city.
María Rivas stressed the importance of bringing broadband service to the entire neighborhood since today it is a fundamental element to favor the settlement of the population in small rural municipalities, and also to help small and medium-sized enterprises that settle there. “The Government is committed to supporting rural municipalities in improving their services and infrastructure, as they are necessary to encourage the citizens to settle and make their vital project in them. In the fight against depopulation, promoting broadband connectivity is a key element.” The deputy delegate insisted that “it is about guaranteeing the people who live in the small municipalities a future in which they have the same opportunities.”
