The subdelegate of the Government, Abel Losada, and the mayor of Tui, Enrique Cabaleiro, inaugurated the exhibition on the cartography of the Portuguese border. The exhibition is an initiative of the Geographical Center of the Land Army and the Subdelegation of Defense in Pontevedra, led by Colonel Miguel Cortés.
Abel Losada thanked the Subdelegation for its work in spreading the culture of defense and praised the technical quality of the exhibition. He underlined the historical importance of the border in relations between Galicia and Portugal and its new role in a united Europe. Losada defined the current “raia” as an axis of socioeconomic growth and stressed that the now symbolic border between Valença and Tui is the space of greatest flow of the entire Spanish-Portuguese border.
The exhibition, which can be seen in the Francisco Sánchez building, shows the historical evolution of the works for the establishment of the border with Portugal, giving preferential attention to the border area along the River Miño. The temporary exhibition presents historical cartography of Galicia and the province of Pontevedra, with special emphasis on the area object of the exhibition: the Spanish Portuguese border, including, among others, coastal maps and river areas in Baiona, Tui or Salvaterra de Miño. It includes illustrative sheets about the Treaty of Limits between the two nations and its historical development to date, as well as the methods and instruments used throughout history for the geometric representation of A Raia and other international borders.
The exhibition can be visited freely and free of charge in the Francisco Sánchez de Tui building, until February 10 (from 9 to 14 h and from 16 to 21 h, from Monday to Friday; from 9 to 13 h, on Saturdays). At the same location, on Wednesday 31 January, at 7 p.m., the conference “Delimitation works in A Raia” will take place, with free entrance until complete capacity
