Ourense, June 21, 2023.- The Senior Cinema program seeks to encourage attendance at cinemas and support the film exhibition sector. With a grant of 10 million euros, 9.5 million people over 65 will be able to attend the cinema for only 2 euros a day a week.
The main exhibitor associations (FECE, NAECE and PROMIO) agreed that the preferred day to implement this measure would be Tuesday, and in case the cinemas did not open that day, it would move to another working day. The rooms interested in being part of the program must request their affiliation on the website of the Ministry of Culture and Sport, with a deadline of 23 June at 23:59 hours.
The Subdelegate of the Government, Emilio González, has highlighted the importance of the program Cine Senior, “it is important to promote the entire film industry of the country and in an area like Ourense where more than 30% of the population is over 65 years old”, “it is a help to encourage people to continue buying and watching movies”.
He also recalled that “the Leiros cinema is one of the last of the rural with presence and real activity in the province”.
The affiliation to the Senior Cinema program will only be for private cinemas, cinemas x and those whose entry price exceeds 2 euros for over 65 years. In addition, tickets can only be sold at the box office, not online.
In the province of Ourense, a total of 6 cinemas can request it; Cine o Barco, Cine Ponte Vella, Centro Cultural Avenida, Casa de Cultura de Verín, Gesma and Novocine.
Novo Cine Leiro reopened its doors in 2003 with the blockbuster film "Avatar" after a break in which it was affected by the irruption of digital and 3D cinema. With more than 40 years of experience and a documentary with Ernesto Romero -the owner- as the protagonist in progress, this will be one of the cinemas seconded in the province of Ourense.
Ernesto Romero pointed out the importance of a program and schedule for seniors, "I'm going to put it on Friday, because maybe it's better for the seniors" and thanks the program because "it's a way for the seniors to enjoy the cinema, that they have a reason to go out and not stay at home, because for health it's good to go out, walk and enjoy".
