Isabel Rodríguez demands joint and coordinated work between administrations to provide an immediate response to mental health problems
The subdelegate of the Government in Lugo, Isabel Rodríguez, stressed today that “mental health must be a priority objective of the public policies of the administrations and, therefore, must be part of the public agenda to make visible, end the stigmas and taboos that exist around this reality, giving voice to a problem that had been hidden for a long time.” The subdelegate made this statement during the inauguration of the “I Days of prevention and awareness of suicide and new addictions in youth”, organized by Alar Galicia in the Territorial Delegation of Lugo. The president of the association, Fernando González; the territorial delegate, Javier Arias; and the Secretary of Equality, Susana López, also participated in the event.
In this sense, Isabel Rodríguez warned that suicide is the first cause of external death in our country since 2008, above traffic accidents; and the first cause of death in the newest people. “A matter as serious and unfortunately with as much impact on our society as suicide we have to treat it as a public health problem. And as such, it is incumbent on all of us. Its prevention requires the joint and coordinated work of professionals in health, education, families and administration,” he said.
“In this line we must continue working, developing measures that give priority to the early detection of this risk, and improving access and assistance in public health services. Building a society that puts a face on a state issue,” said Isabel Rodríguez.
365 Days of the Year Phone Support
In her speech, the subdelegate recalled that there is the disposition of the citizens to Line 024, of Attention to Suicidal Behavior, which works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It is free, accessible, immediate, confidential and cared for by experts, to provide support both to people who may have suicidal behavior and to their relatives and relatives.
New addictions in youth
On the other hand, Isabel Rodríguez stressed the new addictions in youth such as social networks, video games or online gambling, which are generating a very worrying social problem. In this field, he pointed out that the responsible use of new technologies and the Internet is fundamental not only to prevent addiction to them, but also to educate them in the correct use of them, promoting critical thinking and responsible consumption.
