The government delegate in Extremadura, José Luis Quintana, visited this morning one of the points within the speed control campaign that, from today until April 13, the DGT is carrying out together with the Civil Traffic Guard.
Quintana has highlighted the importance of social awareness given that speed is one of the key risk factors in road accidents. “About 30% of fatal road accidents are caused by excessive or inadequate speed. So far this year, in Extremadura we have already registered 7 deaths in the five accidents with victims registered on our roads,” he said.
Therefore, until next Sunday, the agents of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard, in collaboration also with local police, will especially control sections of risk associated with speed, as well as those points where the circulation exceeds the established limit and there is a high accident rate, all following the recommendations of international road safety organizations.
Extremadura closed 2024 with 31 fatalities in traffic accidents on interurban roads, 20 less than in 2023, with what was next to Catalonia the communities that reduced the deaths the most, according to data made public by the Ministry of the Interior.
Despite the trend, Quintana has insisted on the importance of preventive work to raise drivers’ awareness of the risks and prevent issues such as alcohol and drug use, distractions or overspeed from continuing to have the cost of human lives.
