The Government Delegation in Extremadura today celebrated the award of the "Women Who Break Up", a recognition to the Extremadura women who have stood out for their courage and determination in breaking traditional stereotypes and assuming roles that have historically been masculinized. This event, which is held annually, aims to make visible the collective effort of women who, with their work and dedication, have contributed to building a more just and egalitarian society.
This year the institution will award this distinction to four women from Extremadura: the two secretaries-general who lead the two unions CC.OO and UGT in Extremadura, Encarna Chacón and Patrocinio Sánchez, respectively; the Pacense Guadalupe Porras, football referee and first assistant collegiate to debut in the top category of Spanish football and in an international men’s competition; and Loida Zabala, an Extremadura athlete who competes in adapted power lifting and who has recently established a new record of paralympic weightlifting in Spain.
In his speech, the government delegate in Extremadura, José Luis Quintana, highlighted the significant advances that the community has experienced in recent decades in terms of gender equality. “Equality between women and men is not an act of solidarity, but of justice. No democracy can be considered complete if half of its population cannot exercise its rights,” said Quintana, emphasizing the responsibility of all to eliminate the barriers that still persist.
The government delegate also highlighted inspiring examples of Extremadura women, such as the winners of this edition, who have challenged the established rules. “These achievements are not only personal, but collective, and represent the efforts of all women who have struggled to open doors and tear down walls,” she said.
Quintana called on the community to keep the fight for equality alive, remembering that real equality requires concrete policies that guarantee equal pay, family reconciliation and the active participation of women in all areas of public and private life. “The Government of Spain is committed to continue promoting measures that strengthen gender equality, because a society that advances in equality is a stronger and fairer society,” he added.
The event culminated in the awarding of the prizes to the winners, who were given symbolic wings, representing the support and momentum they need to continue flying high in their fight for equality. “From today, you will be ambassadors of the fight for women’s equality,” Quintana concluded, paying tribute to all the women of Extremadura who, through their daily efforts, have contributed to building the society we are today.
The Government Delegation in Extremadura reaffirms its commitment to continue working to promote equality and the empowerment of women in all areas of society.
