The government delegate in Extremadura, José Luis Quintana, highlighted today, at the opening of Expoenergea in Badajoz, the role of the Government of Spain in promoting the transformation of the energy system, which has allowed Extremadura to position itself as the Spanish region that leads the growth of sustainable energy generation. In the period 2020-2024, renewable electricity production facilities with a power of more than 4,000 MW (twice the power of the CN of Almaraz) have been launched in the Extremadura community, with an investment of around 3,000 million euros.
In addition, Quintana has recalled that 9 new photovoltaic plants are currently being processed, 3 hybridization projects with batteries in existing facilities, and 3 pumping projects among which highlights the pumping between the Cedillo and Alcántara reservoirs in the Tagus river, which will have an installed capacity of 440 MW, allowing a reversible energy storage of 16 million kWh, which is equivalent to the average daily consumption of more than 4 million people. These actions will add 2,197 MW more power and whose investment is estimated at 1.7 billion euros.
These data put Extremadura at the forefront of renewable energy generation across the country. Quintana recalled the role of the Government of Spain as the main driver of this transformation “which has allowed to increase the economic, innovation and labor opportunities of the associated industry to position Extremadura and Spain as a benchmark in clean energy”.
Likewise, in this action plan in Extremadura, Red Eléctrica is currently carrying out projects for more than 200 million euros for the improvement of the energy transport network, whose objective is to improve the stability of the electricity system in the territory, increase the capacity for the evacuation of renewable energies and support the high-speed train, all within the electricity planning 2021-2026. Of all the transport facilities in progress, the San Serván – Rio Caya Axis stands out, consisting of the Guadiana and Rio Caya substations and the corresponding 400 Kv double circuit lines, San Serván-Guadiana and Guadiana-Rio Caya that join them.
The Government delegate also recalled the beginning of the works of the Iberian Research Center on Energy Storage, a fundamental step for the development of renewable energy; in which the Government is investing 75 million euros. In addition, more than 130 million euros have been invested in different aids for the transformation of the industrial and social fabric of Extremadura always towards a sustainable model and respectful of our environment.
“All this effort of the Government and private initiative is putting us in a privileged situation to achieve the industrialization of history owes us to the people of Extremadura; but an ecological and environmentally friendly industrialization,” said Quintana. In this sense, he recalled that the first effects of these actions of the Government of Spain are already being seen with such interesting projects as the Gigafactoria of Navalmoral or the diamond factory of Trujillo.
Finally, the government delegate asked the Junta de Extremadura for management capacity to continue the work carried out by Guillermo Fernández Vara in promoting and implementing in our territory new projects capable of promoting the advancement of the territory and its inhabitants.
