The Secretary of State for Territorial Policy, Arcadi Spain, has this morning highlighted “the important role of the State in the territory when it comes to attending to the citizens before the effects of climate change”. He highlighted this at the opening of the XXX European Days of Territorial Representatives of the State (AERTE), which are held these days in Valencia under the motto “Sustainable Development” and which brings together territorial representatives with international counterparts.
The Secretary of State also highlighted the symbolism that this international meeting will be held for the first time in the city of València and after the DANA of October 29, “a catastrophe in which the key role of the Government Delegations and the municipalities was demonstrated, especially in a decentralized country such as ours”. “These days are a great opportunity to learn from what happened, exchange synergies with countries that have also suffered the harsh effects of climate change, such as Turkey or Morocco, and work together to improve prevention that protects citizens,” said the Secretary of State.
AERTE
AERTE was born in 1993 on the occasion of the organization of a “European Conference” by France and Italy. Its members include both EU countries (France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Greece, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, Poland) and non-EU countries (Turkey, Albania, Norway and Morocco). The country that hosts the conference also presides over the association every year.
The association is a forum for exchange and joint work between public officials whose competences generally keep them within the national territory. Thus, AERTE allows mutual knowledge of territorial administration and contributes to the training of its members in the field of administrative culture and community law, in order to improve the application of public policies in the territory. The association aims to extend its scope to all agents of the territorial public administration (national leaders, associations of sub-state agents).
The association annually holds European Days whose theme is related to issues of great interest in the territory, such as the management of the pandemic, consequences of the war in Ukraine, climate crises or the scarcity of natural resources.
