The Christ of Medinaceli of Ceuta will once again comply with one of the most deep-rooted traditions of Holy Mackerel Week, such as the release of an inmate from the Penitentiary Center, something that has not happened since 2019, as a result of the Covid Pandemic.
This year, the act of liberation will take place on Saturday, April 1st, during the transfer from the parish of San Ildefonso to the Casa de Hermandad -whose start is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.-, and will take place in the González Tablas quarry, where the corresponding stop will be made.
As for the prisoner who was released, he is a 28-year-old citizen of Ceuta, who responds to the initials of J.M.A. and is serving a four-year sentence and one hundred and seven days in prison for a crime against public health. This is a conditional release, with his final release scheduled for 9 December 2024.
The selected inmate, who shows a favorable prognosis of reintegration and socio-labor reintegration, has been proposed after maintaining a responsible and involved trajectory during his stay in prison, actively participating in all the tasks and intervention programs proposed to him, and performing different training, educational and labor activities in a satisfactory manner.
During the execution of his sentence, the prisoner has resided in the Module of Respect of the Penitentiary Center, a model of coexistence that aims to provide the prison population with tools to prepare for life in freedom, through the acceptance of democratic and normalized norms of behavior.
From the moment of his release, the “Venerable Brotherhood of Penance and Brotherhood of Nazarenes of Our Father Jesus Captive and Rescued and Mary Most Holy of Sorrows” will exercise the guardianship of the freed, for as long as he remains on probation and until his definitive release.
