Barcelona, October 6, 2025.- El delegado del Gobierno en Cataluña, Carlos Prieto, ha definido Tarragona como “the second great economic, cultural and tourist hub of Catalonia”. As examples of this, the delegate cited the port of Tarragona, the airport of Reus, which in 2024 grew by 13% the number of passengers with respect to the previous year, and the petrochemical complex, “the largest in southern Europe”.
Mentioning “a historical debt to Tarragona”, the government delegate has highlighted the work of the Spanish Executive “by the hand of the City of Tarragona, the Generalitat and the other local institutions” to make the shared objectives a reality. “Today we can say that the discreet and constando work has borne fruit”, Prieto has celebrated.
“Tarragona is in fashion”
The government delegate also wanted to congratulate the city and its city council “for having known how to care and project” The archaeological complex of the city, which he has described as “Treasure that belongs to all humanity.” On the other hand, Carlos Prieto recalled a few words from the mayor, “Tarragona is in fashion”, to focus on how, in recent weeks, the city has been the protagonist of large investments of the State, especially through the Ministry of Culture.
In particular, Prieto has referred to two issues. The first, the new public library of the State, which was announced will be located in the Tabacalera complex with an investment of 20 million euros and which will become the second largest library in Catalonia, with 10,000 square meters.
On the other hand, the government delegate has emphasized “the active participation of the State in the Consortium for the Management of the Roman Heritage of Tarragona”. Together with Ayuntamiento, Generalitat, Diputación and Arzobispado, this cooperation instrument will begin to function fully in 2027 and, as Prieto has assured, “will allow to channel key investments to preserve the heritage of the old Tàrraco”. “The commitment is firm: more than 19 million euros for museographic projects of the Necropolis and the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona, among others”, Carlos Prieto has concretized.
This parliament is part of a day in which the consular body and the authorities visit during this Monday the Archaeological Walk, including the Roman walls, the exterior of the Cathedral and the head of the circus, ending in the praetorium where a visit will be made to the sarcophagus of Hippolytus.
In addition to the consuls and the government delegate Carlos Prieto himself, the mayor of Tarragona, Rubén Viñual, the Councilor of the European Union and External Action of the Generalitat, Jaume Duch, and the subdelegate of the government to Tarragona, Elisabet Romero, were present at this meeting.
