Barcelona, May 21, 2025.- This Monday, May 19, in compliance with current regulations and successive judicial judgments, the notification of the closure and consequent demolition of the Club de Mar de Sitges, scheduled for June 2, 2025, has been sent.
This process responds to a 1994 Ministerial Order, confirmed by the Supreme Court in 2003. In other words, compliance will be maintained with the various firm judicial resolutions issued by the National High Court and the Supreme Court.
Since 2018, the Coastal Demarcation has promoted measures for the recovery of this space, including the demolition of the Mª Teresa swimming pool and storage areas (also managed by the Club de Mar de Sitges).
The intervention also contemplates, in a second phase, the demolition of the restaurants Kansas and Pico-Nic, pending the firmness of the sanctioning file. Once the demolition is complete, the Ministry will promote a project to return the promenade, with a naturalization and stabilization of the dunar system that will allow to recover up to 10,000 m² of dry beach, improving environmental functionality, recreational use and resistance to storms.
Benefit for Citizenship
The demolition of the Club de Mar de Sitges represents the first step of a coastal regeneration project led by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, which foresees an extension of the beach and the naturalization of the coast to guarantee its stability and return to public use.
In the words of the government delegate in Catalonia, Carlos Prieto, “it is about executing a firm judicial sentence”. On the other hand, Prieto has assured that “it is about recovering spaces in the public domain that had been occupied in a manner incompatible with the current regulations”. According to Prieto, “with this project, we gained beach for everyone and protected the coastline against the effects of climate change by gaining 10,000 square meters of beach at the end of the process.”
The project aims to restore the public domain, improve the natural environment and ensure responsible use of the coast. The regeneration of the space will mean an environmental, tourist and security improvement in the face of possible storms, offering citizens and visitors a more sustainable and accessible Sitges. “The Public Administrations have to look after the good of all, and with the project that is proposed, the whole of Sitges wins,” added Carlos Prieto.
