Sant Martí de Tous, October 9, 2024.- The government delegate in Catalonia, Carlos Prieto, has highlighted the “essential” work carried out by the Red Cross and has stressed that this entity together with other NGOs are “a key ally” to respond to the various emergency situations and humanitarian crises facing Spain in an “increasingly globalized” world.
Prieto, accompanied by the president of the Red Cross in Catalonia, Josep Quitet, has visited the facilities of the humanitarian center that the entity has in Sant Martí de Tous (Barcelona) where it stores emergency material that is used in humanitarian crises.
The government delegate highlighted the work of the volunteers and recalled the “prominent role” they played during the pandemic, in the refugee crisis in Ukraine and, currently, in Gaza or with the migratory crisis in the Canary Islands.
In this regard, Prieto has highlighted the “responsible and humanitarian” migration policy launched by the Government of Spain. A policy that recognizes the challenges posed by immigration and solves them, while maximizing the enormous benefits that immigration can bring to our country.
Thus, the reinforcement of the borders but also of the reception system of the Government of Spain are key to addressing the situation and, in this regard, the delegate has highlighted the work of entities such as the Red Cross as one of the essential agents to respond to the challenge.
“The distribution of basic aid in emergency situations and its daily contribution to the population that is in extreme vulnerability are one of the values of the Red Cross that we cannot ignore,” concluded Prieto.
