March 19, 2024.- The Subdelegate of the Government in Valladolid, Jacinto Canales, has today presided over the Provincial Traffic and Road Safety Commission.
The meeting revealed the accident data for 2023 on the province’s roads. In 2023, there were 10 fatalities, in which 11 people died and 10 others were seriously injured.
These figures represent 6 fatal accidents less -37% less-, as well as 7 deaths -39% less- and 2 serious injuries less than in 2022.
One of the people who died in the cars involved in these accidents was not wearing a seatbelt. Instead, all the motorcyclists used the helmet.
Distraction at the wheel is deadly
The departure of the road is the cause of 73% of deaths. Distraction has been the trigger factor in most of these cases, followed by improper speed, failure to respect the priority of passage and driving under the effects of alcohol.
Sixty percent of casualties and 64 percent of fatalities have occurred on high-capacity roads, compared to 2022, when most accidents and fatalities were recorded on conventional roads.
Tourism continues to be the mode of transport with the highest number of deaths, 45%
As for vulnerable users, 3 died in 2023, while 6 died in 2022. No pedestrians or cyclists were registered among the fatalities, although the 3 motorcyclists did, 27% of the total.
Drivers are still the majority of those killed, and men in 81% of cases.
By age, between 45 and 64 years old they had 6 of the 11 fatalities.
September critical
September was the most critical month, with three fatal accidents, compared to February, March, July, August and December, months in which no deaths were recorded on the roads of Valladolid.
Last year, 8 of the 11 deaths on the province’s roads occurred on the weekend, compared to 2022, when accidents on weekdays surpassed those at the weekend. If it is maintained, the time slot between 14 and 20 hours is the one that records the highest number of accidents.
