February 7, 2024.- The Provincial Traffic and Road Safety Commission, which met this morning in the Subdelegation of the Government in Burgos, took stock of the accident on the roads of the province last year 2023. The exercise ended with a total of 243 accidents involving victims and 18 deaths.
The meeting was attended by, among others, the deputy delegate of the Government in Burgos, Pedro de la Fuente, the territorial delegate of the Junta de Castilla y León in Burgos, Roberto Saiz; the provincial head of Traffic, Raúl Galán; the lieutenant colonel of the Command of the Civil Guard of Burgos, Alfonso Martín Fernández; the captain of the Traffic Subsector, Juan Antonio Jiménez, the head of the State Road Demarcation in Castilla and León Oriental, Javier Fernández Armiño, and Area Managers.
During 2023, there were 17 fatal accidents involving 18 people who died, five of whom were men and 13 women. This represents a decrease of five deaths compared to the year 2022. The main concurrent factors in fatal accidents continue to be distractions, inadequate speed, alcohol and drugs.
According to data provided by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), almost 40% of fatalities in accidents are vulnerable users, which include three pedestrians, one cyclist and three motorcyclists. These data represent an increase of more than double the number of victims considered vulnerable users compared to 2022. The rest of accidents with deaths represent 56% of passenger cars and 17% of vans.
This increase, which has been uneven among the different types of vulnerable users, is mainly due to motorcyclists, whose mortality has increased by 31% compared to 2022.
The most frequent causes of fatal accidents are the result of exits from the road. In 2023, the result of deaths by exit of the road was 12 people and three due to traffic accidents, the remaining fatalities were due to collisions.
According to the type of road, where more people have died has been on conventional roads with a total of 12, three on neighborhood roads, two on motorway and one on motorway. In the high-capacity roads, the same deaths have been recorded as last year, three. The month in which there have been the most accidents with deceased people is August.
The meeting also took stock of the operations and special campaigns carried out by the General Directorate of Traffic and the subsector of the Civil Traffic Guard during the past year, as well as advancing the work schedule for the year 2024.
