December 22, 2023.- The government delegate in Castilla y León, Nicanor Sen, presented this Friday the special device that the General Directorate of Traffic has put in place to cover in Castilla y León the 1,972,000 road trips planned on the occasion of the Christmas holidays.
A device that starts today at 15:00 hours and will end on Sunday, January 7, 2024 and that will have more than 1,000 agents of the Traffic Group of Castilla y León and staff of the Management Center of the General Directorate of Traffic.
Sen has stressed that the objective of this campaign is not to register a single death on the Roads of Castilla y León, in a year that has so far resulted in a total of 116 deaths in 106 accidents. A “very high” figure, despite the fact that it represents a 14% decrease compared to the previous year.
That is why the government delegate has appealed to the prudence of all those who are going to put themselves in front of the wheel these days. “It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that we can all meet with our loved ones on these important dates. As the DGT campaign says, arriving late is better than arriving, also at Christmas, and even if it’s Santa Claus.”
In the presentation of the device, the government delegate was accompanied by the government subdelegate in Valladolid, Alicia Villar, the lieutenant colonel Chief of the Traffic Sector of Castilla y León, Francisco Iturralde, and the autonomous coordinator of the DGT, Inmaculada Matías.

TECHNICAL AND HUMAN MEANS
To cover all these journeys, the DGT has prepared a special operation that includes regulation, management and surveillance measures that guarantee mobility and fluidity on the roads and, at the same time, ensure their road safety.
To this end, the DGT has the maximum availability of its human resources (Agents of the Traffic Grouping of the Civil Guard, official staff of the Northern Traffic Management Center, the Helicopter Patrol and personnel responsible for the maintenance of equipment and the installation of measures on the road) which, among other functions, will be responsible for:
- Facilitate the mobility and fluidity of traffic, as well as ensuring road safety on the roads.
- Maintain traffic for all types of vehicles on roads with sections or areas affected by adverse weather conditions such as snow, ice, fog, rain and wind in the appropriate road safety conditions.
- Assist users in any incident or unforeseen that may arise on the trip and monitor the correct behaviour of road users with the human and technical means available in Castilla y León 86 fixed speed control radars, of which 24 are of section, 97 mobile radars that can be loaded into ATGC vehicles, 24 cameras and 3 camouflaged vans to control the use of mobile phones and seat belts.
- Timely reporting of any road incidents through traffic newsletters on the different radio and television stations, on the web www.dgt.es, on Twitter @DGTes and @InformacionDGT and on phone 011.
- To intensify speed and blood alcohol controls as an instrument for the prevention of road accidents.
The complete device can be consulted on the DGT website https://www.dgt.es/conoce-el-estado-del-trafico/recomendaciones-de-trafico/
, a document where you can find traffic forecasts, more unfavourable hours for travel, historical maps, road safety advice and rules, traffic regulation and management measures, as well as the traffic operation by Autonomous Communities
ARRIVING LATE IS BETTER THAN NOT ARRIVING, ALSO AT CHRISTMAS
In these winter days and, in addition, suitable for celebrations, Traffic insists on remembering that drinking alcoholic beverages and driving are incompatible actions. In addition, it is necessary to be cautious in our movements, especially on short and night trips, and always to be informed about the possible adverse weather conditions that may arise at any time of winter.
Prudence is essential because, as the traditional communication campaign of the DGT for these dates recalls, however important the displacement is (and Santa Claus is), “arriving late is better than not arriving, also at Christmas”
