The Government finances with more than 4.8 million euros the creation of 66 new places of Degree in Medicine in Castilla y León
Reinforcement of the SNS staff
September 30, 2023.– The Government, through the Ministry of Health, finances with a total of 4,808,556.02 euros the increase in Castilla y León of 66 places of Degree in Medicine, which materializes in the current academic year 2023-2024.
The total investment for all the autonomous communities amounts to about 50 million euros (49,998,257.74 euros), with which the increase of 677 Bachelor’s Degrees in Medicine in Spanish public universities will be financed. The objective of this measure is to increase the availability of health professionals to alleviate the existing deficit in certain specialties and to strengthen the National Health System (SNS).
The acting Minister of Health, José Miñones, values that this increase of up to 15% in the number of students who start studying medicine this year will serve to strengthen the human resources of the Spanish health system, in line with other measures that the Ministry is carrying out. Among them, it has highlighted the 38% increase in Specialized Health Training places in the last five years, with 11,607 places this year, of which 8,772 are for Medicine, in the largest call in history.
The offer to study the Degree in Medicine in public universities in Spain rises in this academic year to a total of 6,626 places. In the specific case of Castilla y León, this increase in places is distributed as follows:
| CCAA Regional University | CENTRE | Places in verification memory for access to 1st course | Offer | Offer | Net increase of seats 23/24 | Places with Health funding 2023/24* | TOTAL (€) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CASTILE AND LEON | 370 | 360 | 426 | 66 | 66 | 4.808.556.02 | |
| Salamanca | Faculty of Medicine | 180 | 180 | 207 | 27 | 27 | 2.131.502,90 |
| Valladolid | Faculty of Medicine | 190 | 180 | 219 | 39 | 39 | 2,677,053,12 |
The direct granting of grants for the increase of Medical Degree places in Spanish universities in the academic year 2023-2024 was approved by the Council of Ministers last July.
The grant is mainly intended to finance investments aimed at infrastructure and endowment of faculties, as a necessary element for the improvement of Bachelor’s teaching.
With this rule, the Government responds to the need for medical specialists reflected in a report that the Ministry of Health published in March 2021 with a time horizon 2021-2035. This report notes an insufficiency in the number of students graduating from medical schools in relation to the offer of specialized health training places and the needs of some specialties, such as Family and Community Medicine.
The measure is agreed with the autonomous communities, which are competent in this area, and is aimed at public universities to strengthen them. “We are encouraging and supporting the autonomous communities, to increase the number of places in public universities in our country by 15%. The Ministry of Health advances hand in hand with the communities to achieve a stronger National Health System, of higher quality and accessible to all people,” said Miñones.
