A doctor and teacher with Sayagna roots presents “El Camino de Sayago”
New special initiative to promote the development of the Sayago Region and fight against depopulation
August 17, 2023.- “Preserving our legacy before it fades”, That is the premise of a new development project for the region of Sayago inspired by the “Camino de Santiago”. Its author is Sergio Aguilar Vázquez, a Basque doctor and teacher with Sayaguese roots who has been touring the region for two years.
The subdelegate of the Government received this morning this “convinced Sayagués” who has traveled 270 kilometers on foot, first alone and then in the company of his young son of 9: “I decided to visit the region on foot, alone, with no fixed course, sleeping in the open air and eating and drinking what could be, when possible, sharing the experience on social networks. In 2022 the adventure was becoming increasingly interesting discovering unique people and places and it was thousands of people from all over the world who joined this madness through their mobiles, surpassing in a few days the half million views of the stories that I was uploading to my Instagram profile almost in real time. The 2023 edition was joined by my son Gonzalo, who at the age of 9 was overcoming the difficulties of the road while we shared the discovery of the most unusual Sayago with tens of thousands of people and we have long exceeded the million visualizations of our stories. After more than 270 kilometers traveled and more than 33 villages traveled we are already looking forward to completing the road with a third edition next year”.
What could be the utopia of a lover of his land has been taking shape until it becomes an elaborate future project for the Zamorana region that Sergio intends to make a reality. A walking route that would boost the cultural and human wealth of the region and that would help preserve the heritage, places and traditions that are lost without remedy, becoming only a memory: “Sayago still has wonderful people, impressive places, stories to remember… 59 population centers (humble most), with many things to tell and that welcome the traveler who arrives with an open mind and desire to soak up the natural of this land. Sayago is a jewel in its heritage, history, nature and people, who live with the risk of disappearing forever if we do not manage to reverse the trend of recent decades. We must not wait for archaeology to reveal the secrets of our grandparents, but we must be current now, while we can still hear the voices of those who remind us”.
Sergio Aguilar presented this morning to the subdelegate not only the objectives of this idea. Also the benefits that its implementation would entail for the region and in general for the entire province: from the economic reactivation with the demand of potential “pilgrims” of all kinds of tourist services, through the stimulus for entrepreneurs, the conservation of heritage, the development of infrastructures, the settlement of population, cultural interaction, the promotion of the SAYAGO brand as a seal of quality or sustainable development: “Nothing is impossible. Nor would it be the case that “El Camino de Sayago” became a reality that brought future alternatives to many of these peoples who refuse to disappear wrapped in a humble dignity that currently unfortunately does not contribute to the markets.”.
This adventurer whose parents are Carbellino’s, is now looking for support and funding for a dream that, he is convinced, will become a reality.”Zamora deserves a dignified treatment and an opportunity to show its potential. The Camino de Sayago is one of those projects that will one day become a reality officially. I’m sure of that. Hopefully all this sume”.
The subdelegate of the Government, has shown himself “pleasantly surprised” with this project “Different and very original”. Ángel Blanco wanted to expressly thank “The effort of its author to present this idea that we believe could catalyze the development of Sayago. A region with infinite possibilities and in which it is true that things are being done but perhaps not enough. From the subdelegation we will support this “Camino de Sayago” within all our possibilities".
