July 5, 2023.- The Civil Guard recalled today in an act in the Command of Valladolid Colonel Pedro Alfonso Casado, who died a year ago after being shot by a man entrenched in Santovenir de Pisuerga (Valladolid).
The event was chaired by the General Director of the Civil Guard, Leonardo Marcos, who was accompanied by the Government delegate in Castilla y León, Virgina Barcones; and by the Chief General of the Zone, Luis del Castillo.
The general director has proceeded to the discovery of a Commemorative Plaque of the anniversary of the death of Colonel Pedro Alfonso Casado, which will be fixed in the monolith that the Command of Valladolid has dedicated to the fallen. He has also given a plaque to the family of the honoree.
Leonardo Marcos wanted to underline that the memory of Colonel Casado will always accompany us and remain among us, and especially among those who served with him in the Special Intervention Unit. He added that, despite the high price, the mission of this unit of high level of training, healthy and safe release of the retained person, could be successfully completed.
The general director has valued the attitude, professionalism and commitment of today’s colonel Pedro Alfonso Casado, highlighting his image as a born leader, always able to convince his men with his example. He also wanted to convey his gratitude and affection to the family, transmitting their immense admiration and the gratitude of the Civil Guard, the Government of Spain and all of our society for a professional career of dedication and dedication to the protection of citizenship.
In the early morning of July 1, 2022, the Valladolid Command requested urgent support from the Special Intervention Unit (UEI) after the hostage-taking at a home in Santovenir de Pisuerga (Valladolid) of the perpetrator of a homicide.
Upon receiving the request, the head of the UEI proceeded to alert his staff and to travel urgently from his base in Valdemoro (Madrid), taking charge of the incident and relieving the territorial forces upon their arrival.
Once in situ, and after directing the first performances, Pedro Alfonso Casado was shot and wounded by a gunshot. The serious injuries caused the subsequent death of Casado four days later at the University Clinical Hospital of Valladolid.
Colonel Casado was 50 years old, he was a native of Vitoria, and his father was a civil guard as well. He was married and had two daughters.
Alfonso Casado graduated from the military academy of Zaragoza in 1998 and the following year he joined the GAR (Rapid Action Group), one of the first special operations groups of the Civil Guard. In 2000, he joined the UEI (Special Intervention Unit).
He died as Lieutenant Colonel Chief of this Unit. After his death, he has been honorably promoted to colonel. Among the decorations he possessed, the Golden Cross of the Order of Merit of the Civil Guard, the Silver Medal of the French National Defense and the Portuguese D Medal stand out. Nuno Álvares Pereira, among others.
In his 22 years of full-time and continuous service in the ISU, Casado carried out more than 114 operations in the Unit, both in the positions of lieutenant and captain and head of the intervention group, in the position of commander as tactical coordinator of those in the operations and, during his employment as lieutenant colonel, as responsible for the management of the complex and risky operations of the ISU.
In addition, he participated in numerous operations against criminal gangs, the assault of boats on the high seas and the arrest of members of terrorist gangs.
In all of them, Casado participated in the direction or directly directed, as in the latter, the action of the different teams of the Unit to achieve the resolution of the incident.
