June 22, 2023.- The Provincial Traffic and Road Safety Commission, which met this morning in the Subdelegation of the Government in Burgos, has taken stock of the accident in the province so far in 2023. This forum, chaired by the subdelegate of the Government, Pedro de la Fuente, has served to demand prudence from drivers when there are a few weeks to go before the start of the summer vacation period, which is when more trips are made throughout the year.
The meeting was also attended by, among others, the provincial head of Traffic, Raúl Galán; the head of Operations of the Civil Guard Command in Burgos, commander José Manuel González Garrido, the captain of the Traffic Subsector, Juan Antonio Jiménez, the head of the State Road Demarcation in Castilla y León Oriental, Javier Fernández Armiño, the territorial secretary of the Delegation of the Junta de Castilla y León in provincial Burgos, Luis Pedro Pérez, and representatives of the Roads and Works area.
So far this year, 86 accidents have occurred on the roads of the province, of which six were sinister with fatalities, with six people dead (five men and one woman), which means an increase of one more fatal accident but the same number of fatalities compared to the same period of the year 2022. The accident balance is completed with 20 hospitalized injuries and 92 minor injuries.
The victims who died in the first half of the year were five drivers and one passenger. By type of vehicle, three were riding on motorcycles and three in tourism.
The accidents have been due to collisions and outings, mainly due to distractions, inadequate speed and alcohol and other drugs. All accidents have occurred on conventional roads (two on N-120; one on N-1, one on CL-629, one on BU-552 and one on BU-P-8012). January and May have recorded two fatal accidents each, while the other two accidents were in March and April.
Heavy Traffic Restrictions on AP-1
The Commission has also worked on the application of an overtaking ban for lorries on the AP-1 motorway between Rubena and Pancorbo, in both directions, during peak traffic operations during time slots where there are no specific restrictions on heavy traffic. This ban will be informed through mobile signs that will be placed on the track and through variable message panels.
This measure develops the provisions of the Resolution of January 23, 2023, of the General Directorate of Traffic, which establishes special traffic regulation measures during the year 2023 published in the Official State Gazette of January 27, 2023 and in the Traffic and Road Safety Law.
The meeting also took stock of the operations and special campaigns carried out by the General Directorate of Traffic and the subsector of the Civil Traffic Guard during the past year, as well as advancing the work schedule for the second half of 2023.
