Toledo.- The delegate of the Government of Spain, José Pablo Sabrido, has presided over the event organized on the occasion of the Day of the Victims of Terrorism in the National Police. In it, the representative of the central executive has been “sorrowful and honest” and has encouraged the body to continue working because “Spain deserves it”.

The Superior Police Headquarters in Castilla-La Mancha has hosted this emotional event, presided over by the government delegate and the Superior Police Chief of Castilla-La Mancha, Francisco Herrero, in which a tribute has been paid to the 188 agents who have been killed in Spain in terrorist acts between 1968 and 2015.

“I want to express my absolute respect, it is a moment of memory, we cannot forget them,” said the government delegate, who said he was confident that the victims will not be forgotten because “as long as we remember the people, they never die.”

In this regard, Sabrido stressed that the 188 National Police officers, killed by terrorism, “each with a name and surname and whose life was vilely taken away”, is an emotion because “they were public servants working for a fairer, more egalitarian society and defending freedom”.

“I will never have time to recognize enough what you are doing,” said the government delegate, addressing the agents present at the event, offering “my solidarity” to the National Police Force in its work so that citizens are “equal and free,” and “we live safer.”

Commitment of the Government of Spain to the National Police

The number of National Police personnel in Castilla-La Mancha has risen since 2018 by 18%, which translates into 250 more officers, in addition to having a replacement rate of 115% nationwide.

In fact, the new public offer of employment for the National Police amounts this year 2026 to a total of 2,854 personnel. 2,704 for the Basic Scale and 150 for the Executive Scale.

A commitment that also extends to the National Police stations, since Cuenca and Puertollano already have a new building in operation, the works of the GEO base in Guadalajara are already in execution and are progressing at a good pace, or the next inauguration of the new Documentation Unit in Almansa.

All this is the reason why Castilla-La Mancha, thanks also to the work of other State Security Forces and Corps, is a safe region that is nine points below the national average in terms of crime rate, and that is growing increasingly in terms of clarified crimes.

For his part, the superior head of the National Police in Castilla-La Mancha, Francisco Herrero, has referred to the murdered agents who were linked to the region. Among them, the chief inspector María José García Sánchez, first victim, whose death is the reason for this day to be commemorated on June 16 and with family ties in the Toledan town of Plumbers.

“It is a very special day, of remembrance of our victims and of an institutional nature, but it makes us move,” said Herrero during his speech.

The head of the National Police focused on the fact that “the police do not seek revenge”, betting on trust in our democratic system, our way of life and competences, which “are maintained thanks to the thin blue line”.

In memory of the victims, Herrero explained that “the passage of the years must not cause us to distort our memory” and “his example is the spur for us to continue exercising our work.”
