Toledo.- The delegate of the Government of Spain in Castilla-La Mancha, José Pablo Sabrido, has presented in the Historical Archive of the Nobility, in Toledo, the events that will be held on the occasion of the World Archives Day, which is celebrated on June 9.

José Pablo Sabrido has praised the archives as a “space of knowledge”, precisely “against the current hoaxes”, stating that currently “it is very important to have reliable knowledge”.

On the other hand, it has also praised the “exercise of transparency” represented by the archives, which it has defined as “authentic public service to serve as a precedent, justice, own or social interests”.

And finally, he explained that the work they do is “a factor of citizen creation”: “It helps us to know where we come from and where we are going. They are a heritage of society.”

In this regard, he has warned of the need to combine Artificial Intelligence or social networks, which capture current events, with truthful information and against the hoaxes that represent the archives.

The government delegate was accompanied by the director of the Historical Archive of the Nobility, Aranzazu Lafuente, and the director of the Museo del Greco, Carolina Tobella.

The Historical Archive of the Nobility has face-to-face and online events

The Historical Archive of the Nobility will this year carry out two days of theatrical guided tours, in which you will be able to know both the history of the center and the work carried out by the archivists. At the end of it, a tour is made of a sample of documents that allows you to glimpse the chronological and typological variety of historical documentary sources that can be found in the center. In addition, on the 10th they will present the catalogue of the exhibition ‘Imago Regis. Art and portrait in painted documents of the Archive of the Nobility’.

The director of the Historical Archive of the Nobility, Aranzazu Lafuente, stressed that the commemoration of this day is “an opportunity to highlight and show what is done in cultural institutions that are very hidden from the public because it is a very long-term work”.

On the other hand, the center will publish in the Portal of Spanish Archives the documents of Álvaro de Bazán, just on the fifth centenary of his birth, and the galeras of Lepanto, both belonging to the bottom of the marquises of Santa Cruz. “An impressive documentation that was in private hands” and that consists of “descriptions and more than 20 thousand images of original documents with all the instructions of Felipe II or Carlos V, but also of the day to day in the galleys”, according to Lafuente.

The Museo del Greco joins this celebration for the first time

For its part, the Greco Museum will join for the first time in the celebration of Archives Day with an exhibition of unpublished documents on the life of Doménico Theotokopoulos in Toledo.

An exhibition that will serve to “contextualize its collections based on the documentary heritage of two important archives, which are on the one hand the Provincial Historical Archive and on the other hand the National Historical Archive”, according to the director of the Museum, Carolina Tobella, who pointed out that this “will allow us to approach the work and figure of El Greco”.

In it, the emphasis will first be placed on the work of the first researchers of the figure of the painter, who met in a climate of recovery of the figure of the artist, converted into one of the great icons and father of the Spanish school of painting. Among them, figures such as the Count of Cedillo, Martí and Monsó, Bartolomé Cossío or Francisco de Borja San Román.

The second section will be starring in the documentation preserved on the painter, organized into several themes: his personal life, his work and his legacy. And finally, the legacy that El Greco left in the city of Toledo after his death will have prominence, since many of the artists who went through his workshop continued their trail, contributing to the creation of a true school of the city.

‘Archives for Justice’, the motto chosen for this year

Archives for Justice’ is the motto chosen this year by the Ministry of Culture for a celebration that falls within the framework of International Archives Week.

A date that is commemorated on June 9 because that same day, but of 1948, the International Council of Archives was established under the auspices of UNESCO.

Subsequently, following the holding of an International Congress in Vienna in 2004, which had more than 2,000 participants, it was approved to request the United Nations to create a commemorative day, which would be accepted in November 2007.
