- The roadside surveillance, regulation and safety device will start at 3 p.m. this Friday and will last until midnight on Tuesday, 6 January.
From 3 p.m. on Friday, 19 December, and until Tuesday, 6 January 2026, the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) will implement the special mechanism for regulating, managing and monitoring the 22.4 million road trips planned for the Christmas holidays throughout the country, which will be around 533,000 in Cantabria.
As usual, different phases have been established in this special operation that coincide with the main Christmas festivities. During these periods, the largest number of the 533,000 trips planned on the Cantabrian roads will be accumulated.
The first phase will take place from this Friday 19 to Thursday 25 December, and 203,000 vehicle displacements are planned along the main roads of the Autonomous Community, 17% of the total of Spain.
The second phase will take place from Friday 26 December to Thursday 1 January, with a forecast of 185,000 trips on the Cantabrian roads, and the third and last phase, from Friday 2 to Tuesday 6 January, with 123,000 trips.
Many of the trips will be directed to second homes, mountain areas for winter sports, areas of winter and Christmas tourist attraction, as well as commercial areas.
In Cantabria, a greater presence of vehicles is expected at the accesses to Santander on the S-10 and S-30, on the A-8 motorway at the height of Castro Urdiales, Laredo and Torrelavega. Retention is also expected on the A-67 between Gornazo and Tano (direction Torrelavega), and at the height of the tunnels between Molledo and Los Corrales de Buelna.
As for the weather conditions, Traffic warns of the possibility of ice and snow in the mountain ports of Pozazal (A-67 and N-611), San Glorio (N-621), El Escudo (N-623), Los Tornos (N-629), as well as in several of the secondary network. On the A-67 motorway, the DGT warns of possible dense fog between Lantueno and Reinosa, and on the stretch between Molledo and Los Corrales de Buelna.
Due to works in execution, the DGT recalls that there are speed limitations due to narrowing of lanes on the A-67 between Polanco and Santander, while on the N-621 between Barreda and Sierrapando the platform is being conditioned.
From the Government Delegation in Cantabria and the Provincial Traffic Headquarters remember that it is important to avoid the most unfavorable hours to travel, plan the trip on the safest route to avoid unforeseen events and inform yourself of the state of the roads through the Twitter accounts of DGT (@informacionDGT and @DGTes), the newsletters on radio and television, as well as on phone 011.
