The government delegate in Cantabria, Pedro Casares Hontañón, has extended his hand to the Government of Cantabria and the municipalities “in a community pact” to work together to respond to the “real” problems of housing in the autonomous community.
“We have said it from the beginning and I also said it in my inauguration, housing has to be the priority of public policy because it is the main problem of citizenship in Cantabria,” he said.
Casares made these statements at the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP) before attending the conference of the Secretary of State for Energy, Joan Groizard, together with the president of the Ecological Transition Commission, Cristina Narbona, on 'the new dynamics of the ecological transition'.
For the government delegate, “the problem of the citizens of Cantabria is not the non-payment of rent or the occupation of housing, the Government of Cantabria places a bad focus on the problem that the Cantabrians have”.
“The problem of the Cantabrians is that they cannot access a home, the problem of the Cantabrians is that they cannot rent or buy a home, and therefore that is where from public policy the solutions”, he explained.
Thus, Casares has said that “the non-payment of rentals or occupation are not the focus because they are problems but they are residual problems in Cantabria and the rest of Spain”.
Therefore, the government delegate has asked the government of María José Sáenz de Buruaga for “real solutions”.
“The Government of Spain has put a solution on the table, which is to triple investment in public housing in the coming years with that new State Plan that has been offered by the President of the Government,” said Casares, who has asked President María José Sáenz de Buruaga “to rectify and embrace that State Plan that is going to move from 30 million euros of investment in housing to almost 130 million in the coming years.”
In this sense, Casares has appealed to “work together all public administrations to solve this problem”.
“From there, there are many things that we have to do, such as developing the State Housing Law to control the overcrowding of tourist flats, the creation of stressed areas, as some municipalities in Cantabria have already requested, such as Comillas or Castro Urdiales, and for now the Government of Cantabria continues to turn its back,” he said.
Finally, the Government delegate in Cantabria, Pedro Casares, has pointed out that he has not had any response from the Government of Cantabria “to that sincere offer that I have made as a Government delegate to solve and work together on the problem of housing in Cantabria”.
