The delegate of the Government in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, highlighted on Tuesday that the Government of Spain has managed to reverse the loss of troops in the State Security Forces that took place between 2012 and 2018 until reaching today the "historic maximum". He highlighted this during the celebration of the 181st anniversary of the founding of the Civil Guard, which he chaired together with the chief colonel in the Autonomous Community, Antonio Orantos.
Held at the headquarters of the Command that is located in the Santanderino neighborhood of Campogiro, the event has had the presence of numerous civil and military authorities, as well as an assistant public, and has begun with the reading of extracts from the Founding Decrees of the Corps, followed by the farewell of the Flag by the retired personnel. Then, decorations and diplomas have been awarded to various members of the Armed Institute in recognition of their work and trajectory.
During her speech, the government delegate stressed that "the Civil Guard is a fundamental reference in the protection of our society, which has made honor, integrity, neutrality and commitment its essential pillars, and always with a solid ideology of service to others."
Gómez de Diego recalled that the Civil Guard currently has more than 80,000 troops and more than 2,000 barracks scattered throughout the national territory, and stressed the commitment of the central executive with the improvement of the means and the increase of troops. In this regard, he pointed out that the Council of Ministers recently approved a historic call for more than 6,000 new places for the State Security Forces and Corps, of which 3,118 will go to the Civil Guard.
"This government is committed to actions, to more civil guard, to more and better means and to reforms in the cantonments," said Gómez de Diego, who stressed that Spain has reached the "historic maximum" of agents under the presidency of Pedro Sánchez.
181 years of transformation
In his speech, Gómez de Diego also highlighted the evolution and modernization that the Civil Guard has experienced throughout its history, highlighting the performance of "the men and women who make possible the well-being and progress of our society." "You must feel enormously proud and proud because your role is key to making Spain today one of the safest countries in the world. And Cantabria is one of the safest autonomous communities," he said.
In this way, the delegate has stressed the importance of the work of the Civil Guard in areas such as citizen security, nature protection, road safety, control of weapons and explosives or rescue in mountain and sea, among others. She has also highlighted the social work carried out by units such as the Roca Team or the Woman-Minor Teams (EMUME), especially in the fight against gender violence.
"Together we share some concerns, especially the scourge of male violence that makes us in Cantabria have 1,519 women within the VIOGEN system. The EMUNE, Woman-Minor teams of the Judicial Police of the Civil Guard are essential units for the help and protection of women victims and their children," he said.
"The Civil Guard is and will continue to be one of the institutions most loved and valued by the citizens and, for this, the most appreciated treasure of this institution are its women and men, who protect us every day. I am very proud of your work, commitment and dedication", concluded the delegate.
The act has continued with the tribute to the fallen, in memory of the civil guards who died on duty, followed by the interpretation of the anthem of the Civil Guard. The celebration has ended with a parade of the participating troops.
